My crew is in the process of designing and ultimately building a bridge (portable and hopefully done by Armada III).  We plan to have consoles with dmx lights in them for things like red alert, helm in reverse, shields raised, etc.  I want to have lights in all 5 freestanding consoles.  I understand DMX works via daisy chaining lights after one another, does that mean I need to send signal from server to station 1 which sends to 2 which sends to 3...or can I have signal go from server to each station in a spoke fashion (running the dmx cable alongside the network cable).

What sort of equipment do I need for each station to control the individual light(s) for each light-up spot?  I know I need a USB to RS485 adapter and then some number of DMX Controllers (unknown how many) and cabling (I seem to recall reading that cat5 can be used for this).

The standard protocol is daisy chaining from one to the next, typically with lower number addresses closer to the server. I'm sure there are folks who have had success with the spoke model, but that's pretty specifically against spec.

The setup that has worked for most folks goes as follows:

Server --> USB-DMX --> DMX Controller --> DMX Controller --> etc
..........................................|-- Light.................|- Light

As far as the equipment in each station, it depends on the light, to be honest. You can reduce your cabling complexity with a "smart" LED strip and controller in each station, where each light in the strip is serially addressed, or you can go the "dumb" LED strip route where each chunk of strip only gets a PWM for control and you'd need several controllers for multiple light sections.

Cabling technically just needs 3 wires to pass the signal, then a DC power source. Cat 5 is commonly used because it's cheap and available to pass power over 3 of the pairs and signal over the other.

I made a presentation last year at Armada II (and Armada I, I suppose), and I cover some of the basics there: https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/diy-dmx-panel-and-workshop-7156593?pid=1291946664

Let us know if you have more specific questions!

Thanks Mark!  Between that video, the Hyperion build thread, and the Snackbar build thread, that answers all the initial questions.  I am -sure- I will need help when we actually get around to installing it all.

No problem! When you get it set up, make sure to post pictures!

If you're bringing a rig to Armada, make sure to indicate that on the online ticket info [smile]

Here are the DMX posts that I have made regarding DMX

This is DMS at its most basic. it is a USB that goes to a simple 3channel dumb controller. Inexpensive and will get you started.
https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/cheap-usb-interface-and-dmx-led-strip-build-7833577?highlight=dmx&trail=15

This is a simple diffused light that I made. Its super cheap at around $7 worth of materials (plus lights)
https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/cheap-and-easy-diffused-light-for-dmx-8183337?highlight=dmx&pid=1293749342

This goes into the more advanced side of things with making your DMX setup modular. this uses a smart controller, though it can be done with a dumb controller as well.

this has a lot of general hardware information in it. Im sure there will be more questions. please ask

have already talked to Katherine about getting a 12x12 space.  We will have a bridge, it will hopefully have lights, but it will be playable without lights.

Mark bell is also doing a DMX lab this year. $20 Bucks get you DMX lights that you can use. Pretty good deal.

Yep! The DMX workshop is open to all, but if you get the kit, you'll get a USB-DMX device, a DMX light controller, power supply, and strip of lights. It's a bridge starter kit, very similar to notsabbat's cheap DMX thread [smile]

Hey I just wanted to weigh in since I had to figure this out a lot on my own and I don't want you to have to go thorough that. Here is a video I made on dmx...

If you need help just message me directly. We can even voice chat if you want.
