Hey folks,

I am pretty new to Artemis but I came to the Armada (Team Hyperion) and had a great time.  I sat through the DMX talk and was really excited to setup my bridge.  I'm an Electrical Engineer (RF systems) so I thought this would be a piece of cake for me.  So far I've failed to get Artemis to make my lights so much as flicker.

I think I got the same Holidaycoro setup that I saw at the armada.

USB to DMX
Holidaycoro.com AcitDongle #53/V2
http://www.holidaycoro.com/Enttec-Pro-Compatible-DMX-Dongle-p/53.htm

DMX Controller
http://www.holidaycoro.com/3-Channel-DMX-Controller-for-RGB-Lights-12v-DC-p/37.htm

I'm using some RGB Common +12V lights that I had laying around from another project.

I'm running Windows 7 (64bit).

What I've tried:

I can get my setup to work fine with XLights which holidaycoro recommends to test their equipment.  So I'm pretty sure I don't have a wiring or addressing issue.

I'm using the default settings & drivers.  I have confirmed that I'm using the ftd2xx.dll driver not the VCP driver that I've seen others mention on the forum.

I have tried changing the COM port from the assigned port to COM1 and this didn't help.

I don't get anything when I tried playing with DMXCommander either.  Admittedly I didn't try very hard.

I've tried different computers with the same results.

I've also tried V2.1.1 and V2.1.9 of Artemis.

My Questions:

Is there anything I need to enable in the Artemis config files to turn DMX on?

Do I need to set the COM port to a particular port?

What else should I try?

Thanks for any help.

-Robert

The problem is you're using the Wnttec Pro compatible usb-dmx - Artemis only supports the Enttec Open compatible converters.

DMX Commander and the like typically support other converters, but Artemis doesn't.

I do have a super cheap open compatible controller coming in the next day or three that I'll be testing, so hopefully there will be a cheap remedy soon [smile]

LawsonThompson reported a way to get it to work in the thread at http://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/basic-dmx-from-amazon-com-6561692 (see especially post #16 in that thread).

And if you wait a bit longer, I'll add Enttec Pro support to Artemis DMX Tools so Artemis can use it without that workaround.

So you can exchange the Enttec Pro for an Enttec Open if you want, but I'll be looking for someone with a Enttec Pro soon to test it for me. [smile]

One suggestion...make sure to read up on the differences between "smart" and "dumb" LED modules. The smart modules let you do SOOOO much more with them.

@davisn456 - too true!  But you'll need to get a controller that supports whatever particular type of "smart" strings you have.

I will probably go ahead and get a Enttec open usb-dmx just so I can get up and running sooner rather than later.

I'll hold on to this Enttec Pro dongle.  Let me know when you are ready and I'd be glad to do some testing.

Thanks Again

It's ready, can you test it with the Enttec Pro dongle and let me know whether it works for you?

See http://www.armidalesoftware.com/Artemis/DMXTools.htm and especially the "How to use an Enttec DMX Pro controller with Artemis SBS" summary.  You should be able to test it from within ArtemisDmxEditor first and if that works then it should also work from Artemis itself.

Hey,

Sorry I've been so long to reply I haven't really done much with artemis since the armada last year and I'm just digging into a new build for this years armada.

I tried out the Enttec DMX pro dongle with your software and it works fine.  I don't have a ton of stuff defined yet but everything I tried has worked well.

Thanks
