A few days ago me and a group of friends got together for my girlfriends b-day party. She wanted to do an Artemis party. We were going to do our very first 2.0 LAN game.

We got everything setup and going and I wanted to try my new Logitech Extreame 3D Pro joystick. I have used the joystick before in a few WAN games just fine and was excited to hook it up for helm.

We plugged it in, it loaded the drivers. We connected to the server and got helm loaded.

The joystick worked great! We were able to steer and use impulse.

The issue is when we tried to use Warp. We pressed the Warp 1 button on the joystick and the slider went up and displayed the #1 but warp was not engaged. I tried using the mouse, same thing, no warp.

We shut down artemis, unplugged the joystick, reinstalled artemis and reloaded hte server. Warp worked fine. We tried it again on another computer, same results...no warp.

How come it worked great on my computer on WAN, but didn't work at the party. We wasted 45 mins trying to get it to work. The person who was doing helm was disappointed.

This is why I actually have a flashdrive with a preconfigured version of Artemis and all the tools necessary to run my PS3 controller. Programs tend to not work for me when I'm trying to show something off [tongue]

In all seriousness, I have no idea why this happened...

Well I was using the stock "controls.ini" file so i figured it should of worked....

Ill install Artemis to my flashdrive and run it off that and test it with the joystick, if it works Ill test it with the same drive on another computer with the joystick.

I also got a PS3 controller, if you could offer any advice on how to get it working on Windows 7 and Artemis, feel free.

To clarify, you're saying that after you plug in the joystick the UI doesn't even work for Warp anymore?

When I have the joystick plugged in and open Artemis, warp does not...warp.

I have not been able to replicate the problem since the party.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and what they did to solve it.

If it happens again ill document it much better. We were at a party and I didnt have much time.

Dart_Tech,

mmesiech's question was:

Have you tried going to warp via the keyboard by pressing the 1, 2, 3, and/or 4 keys, and tried the mouse, sliding the slider up on screen to the top of the green slider while the joystick is plugged in, not just the buttons on the joystick?  Did any of the other methods cause the ship to go to warp, or did they fail as well?

I tried the mouse and it changed the numbers, but still didn't Warp...Warp was just not working with it plugged in.

I never knew about the 1-4 keys :/

The only kinda reasonable idea I have as to what may have happened is that this could be an instance of the ship being in "Reverse".  The ship will not go to warp while reverse is active.  This can be done by accidentally hitting the "esc" key on the keyboard.  It is possible that this is the case as you have not be able to replicate it.

The thing that makes me doubt this idea of mine is that you were able to fly forward at impulse.  If you were in reverse you should have quite easily seen that fact while flying at impulse.  The only other answer off the top of my head would be quite unlikely as it would have had to have been a real coincidence: both times you were in the presence of a Skaaran Executor with tractor beam capabilities.  This is highly unlikely.

I am spit-balling questions that come to mind.  Did the computer you installed this on that worked have the Logitech drivers installed for the joystick, or was it auto configured by the operating system when you plugged it in?  Was it the same operating system as the two systems that it failed on?  Did the other two computers perhaps have older Logitech drivers installed on them?

I am not quite sure at this point myself.  It would be hard to say without looking at the two computers that it failed on, knowing that the joystick does in fact work on your hardware.  I don't own an Extreme 3D yet, and have only working with an old and failing Wingman ForceFeedback, so I can't speak to the stick itself.  This is a reminder that I should pick one up.

Hopefully someone else has a few more ideas or has specifically run into this combo problem.

1) That seems resasonable, I ran some tests though and when your in reverse and try to warp, the slider changes, but the warp number stays 0. At the party the Warp number changed corresponding to the warp level.

2) Impulse was driving me forward, and no enemy ships were in the area.

3) Windows loaded the drivers on my system (Windows 7) and on the party machine (Windows 7).

4) Do pick one up....it works great when your not doing a Artemis B-day party [tongue]

I may go back to the place we did the party and ask to do a quick check of the machines with the joystick and try to recreate the conditions and get screenshots...maybe it was a 1 time fluke....

Ill keep this thread updated.

Good luck with it and I hope that you do not run into the problem in the future, but do find an answer.

Sorry for the late reply. What I do to get my PS3 controller working is I plug it in via the usb charging cable, run motionjoy and emulate the controller as an Xbox 360 controller so the game can see it (for some reason the PS3 controller doesnt work in PS3 mode) then open up joytokeys to get the final few buttons to work (mainly just the mainscreen options on the D-pad and zooming in and out on the helm screen).

Motion Joy can be found here: http://www.motioninjoy.com/
Joytokeys can be found here: http://joytokey.net/en/
my config files can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8c3piTpOTFVMk9QVGI4SUhOZTQ/view?usp=sharing (instructions included with the zip file).
My controlls for the game do not replace the keyboard controls, meaning you can use a combination of the controller and keyboard if you so wish.
My controlls are as follows:
Left stick - turning/impulse
***D-pad - front, side, and rear views
X - increase warp
O - decrease warp
Square - raise sheilds (for those tense moments when both helm and weapons go for sheilds so I dont accidentally lower them)
triangle - dock
L1 - reverse
R1 - raise/lower sheilds
L2/R2 - climb/dive respectively
Select - Tactical view
Start - Status view
***L3/R3 - zoom in and out on helm

*** indicates that I needed to use Joytokey to get these to work. Artemis doesn't like HOATS inputs (which is the D-pad) and I used up the max number of allocatable buttons so I couldnt bind L3 and R3 in the game's config file.

To get Joytokey to do those functions and the config file for it I linked didn't work, look for and enter the following:
POV:up ---- F2
POV:right ---- F4
POV: down ---- F5
POV:left ---- F3
Button 9 ---- T
Button 10 ---- Y

Once you do all of that, the PS3 controller should work the exact same as mine (you can do everything but change the mainscreen and zoom in and out on helm while selected on a different instance of Artemis). I've heard some people say you can steer the ship while on LRS or Science if you have those selected on helm too, but haven't actually tested this.
