In July I will be attending the North American Science Fiction Convention (aka NASFiC or NorthAmeriCon '17) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I have been assigned as a panelist on three panels and a moderator on one panel. I have also been asked to do an in-person reading of my own original Science Fiction. I have done this before at NASFiCs and WorldCons.

The problem is that I am working on an interactive novel set in the Artemis universe. The interactive novel must be played like a game - - - it is not something I can read to an audience. I haven't yet written a prose story in the Artemis universe.

Nevertheless, I do want to read something set in the Artemis universe. I will write a short, military Space Opera.

Thus I'm asking Artemis forum participants for story prompts. Here are the parameters:
  • Must be a short story, not a novel. Limited number of characters and subplots.
  • Typically a single viewpoint protagonist, though it's possible to slip into antagonist viewpoint.
  • Must be compatible with existing Artemis canon, though it may expand upon that canon.
  • May be set during any period of Artemis history.
  • Viewpoint character may be human or alien.
  • Viewpoint character could be an officer on a TSN or Ximni warship, though I'd also entertain a Space Pirate.
  • Because I must read this to an audience, the story must be light humor, dark comedy, or outright farce. I am not proficient at reading drama, horror, or gritty adventure.
  • The plot should not be a direct parody of Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG, or any other franchise.
  • I have a history of reading time-travel stories at sci-fi conventions. This year I'd prefer to avoid time travel, though I'll always jump on a good prompt.
I thank you in advance for your story prompts.

P.S. If you see something you like feel free to write your own fanfic.

Thanks, Admiral. I like the heist of the century idea! But I might have the Arvonian work for some space pirates who are colorful characters in a different way, attempting to sell the maguffin to the highest bidder.

A Captain's mission contains an autocorrect typo directing them to sell their prototype torpedoes, and the space pirates are all too happy to help.

A rookie Comm officer accidentally taunts the Admiral at the base.

A Space Pirate crew discovers an abandoned freighter containing the latest in Lotus Eating Machine technology.

I love this, since it's so close to an old favorite Hugo Award Winning story by Eric Frank Russel, "Allamagoosa."

I'm writing for an adult audience. Maybe Comms announces to the sector that Admiral Hardcastle gets frisky with Torgoth Cub Scouts or Kralien Priests or something like that. [crazy]

I find myself strongly drawn to a Space Pirate twist on O. Henry's "The Ransom of Red Chief." A pirate crew gets their hands on an ancient Kralien artifact, intending to sell it for a tidy profit. But the artifact's psionic powers affect the pirates' behavior in ways no self-respecting space pirate will admit. Soon the pirates are planting flower gardens, playing checkers, and paying their taxes. Then the pirates discover that no one wants the artifact . . . they can't even give the damn thing back to the Kraliens!

That sounds interesting, Trigger Happy. I assume the story is set in the Artemis universe(?).

If you want to discuss your story I invite you to start a thread about it.

If you want to discuss the possible mission script I suggest that you post a description of it under Mission Scripting. Maybe one of us will take up the challenge of writing the script.

The story of a pirate crew in the Artemis universe is well underway. If you would like to hear me read it to an audience, come to NorthAmericon 17 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My reading is scheduled for 3:00 on Saturday, July 8 in the Sol room.

I am very pleased with the reception I received for my reading. I had a very large audience which included several notable science fiction writers. In fact I experienced an unprecedented event in that the convention staff asked me to please repeat the reading for staff members who had been on duty elsewhere during my time slot.

It seems that the time may be ripe for the adventures of an all-female space pirate crew.

Imagine, no author, just Audio.

*Scrambeld Comms* ... are exploring the Planet. There are about 5 Stations in the closer Orbit. We need to perform a closer,... wait. Incoming Enemy ships! Looks like Kraliens! *Static Sound of Comms*
*Static Sounds of Comms* ... We see them too, turning by, engaging the Enemy. You recieve any information about their shield? Seems they are off?! *Static Sounds of Comms*
*Static Sounds of Comms* Copy. No Shield, they are still going head on. Are they speeding up? Did we, accidently, stumbled over something important? Like a Shrine Wor... "Scrameld Comms*"
*Static Sound of Comms* KRYPTER KRYPTER KRYPTER, enemy Fleet is making a balistic flight! They will crash head on, into us! Jump away! Warp out! Get aw... *exploding noises*

And so the the Scroll of Amborax says, smash any unbeliever who try`s to get a blink of the Holy Worlds. Smash them without a word but with trambling speed. Use your head fellow Kralien. Use you head.

- Would say somehwat dark humor, isn`t it?

That could be made into a good story or even a film. It would not be possible as a mission script because ramming is not a viable form of attack in the game, which is too bad. Kralien suicide rams would be fun.
