I think that's an understandable and fair comment.

Nothing more frustrating than getting a game that you can't play.

Is Thom at least aware of the issue? Has he told the iOS devs?

I originally posted the problem when I upgraded by iPad air to ios8, back in September. I've remained largely quiet on this forum since that post - lurking and watching (and waiting) for some answer/response.

Silence.

My $2.99 purchase of the app hasn't broken my bank. I did buy the full server version ($30USD) - which again hasn't broken the bank. I talked a few friends into the app purchase - still no bank breaking. So, my complaint isn't that we spent money (seemingly wasted on a bad iOS update.) No, my complaint is the deafening silence.

Great idea, poor execution: a sandbox with a following. It's just sad that the sandbox turned out to be a litter box; one completely full of sh!t and piss.

So, sod off Artemis. Thanks for wasting my time.

Yeah, it is the complete lack of support here that has me off the game too. Purely psychological.

I have purchased three or four licenses for the server game at this point. I checked in on this issue when I was gearing up to run a very visible game wih a bunch of guests as a panel at a convention, back in October. I still ran it but two of the guests had expected to play on their pads and I had to scramble for extra computers. And while we got it and made everything run smoothly, I really felt hung out to dry when mere weeks went by in October and I had no info or updates. Now I just feel like I've been given the middle finger.

I won't be running it again next year.

Maybe run it PC only? I was hoping for a Mac port. But given the state of the iOS app…

iPad 2, iOS 9.2 (13C75)
1. download and Install Artemis on iPad
2. Launch it.
3. Close it.
4. Launch it again.
Results: Black screen that doesn’t go away.
Expected: launch again without problems.

5. Uninstall Artemis.
6. Install again.
7. enter server's DNS name
Results: message "failed connection attempt".
8. Close Artemis.
9. Launch it again.
Results: Black screen with the ip address in white, doesn’t go away. No message. The ip address text is editable: if I touch it, the keyboard comes up.
Expected: launch again without problems.

10. uninstall artemis.
11. install again.
12. enter server's numeric ip address
Results: message "failed connection attempt".
App is still responsive and can quit normally.

13. Quit Artemis.
14. Relaunch Artemis.
Results: Black screen. Unresponsive app. Sigh.
Expected: launch again without problems.

I'm currently running the software on several models of iPads. Including an iPad 2 with iOS 9.2.1. and Artemis  version 2.1.1.  I am connecting to an Artemis server 2.1.1 running on widows 10.

Have you rebooted the iPad or cleared the memory of the iPad?

Remove the Application from active memory by double-clicking the home button and then sliding up on the black screen. You can then try to relaunch the application. Note: Just  hitting the home button when you're in application does not remove the application from memory, so when you hit the application icon again you're just picking up where you left off. And that's where I believe you're getting the black screen.

To clear all memory Close all applications by double-clicking the home button then sliding each application that you see up. Hold the power button until he iPad asks if you want to shutdown, release the power button, ignore the question and then hold the home button down until the screen flashes. This would've cleared all memory without a reboot.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks for responding, William. I’ll give this a go. … That’s a neat trick; I did not know the iPad would do that. It’s faster than uninstall-reinstall. That said, I noticed that I cannot see the text field for the ip address while I’m typing it in, and there’s no way to select it and delete its contents that I accidentally pasted … so I got to practice the maneuver again. (All I see is a thin horizontal stripe of the swirly background above the keyboard.)

I tried to connect to my friend’s server, but again it failed. Once this is tried, the “Connect to Server” button becomes unresponsive. I have to click Back and then Start Client and then blindly enter the ip address. Again.

If I now quit and restart the app, it will give the black screen again. My guess is that a failed connection attempt leaves it in an unhappy state from which it cannot recover. A misspelled ip address will cause this to happen.

I cleared the app from memory, launched it, did nothing else, and pressed the button to kill it. I launched it again and it failed to the black screen.

I don’t have a way to get to a version number for Artemis; it’s whatever the App Store gave me today. My iPad is an iPad 2 with 16 GB and version 9.2 of iOS.

After fixing these bad behaviors, it would be nice if it could keep a list of favorite servers to pick from. Can one enter a domain name? (My friend with the server is an IT guy; he names servers properly.)

I coordinated with my friend who has the server. I did manage to connect to his server, the latest and greatest just downloaded today, version 2.2.0. I have the latest and greatest downloaded from the App Store today. When I logged in with my iPad client, it told me "wrong server version 2.2.0". I was able to click a few clickies and see the server's ships and roles, but it tended to quit suddenly. Never saw anything interesting beyond that.

You guys got a huge amount of positive publicity at FurCon in San Jose over the weekend. My friends played a couple of missions; I wish I had! We're really excited about this sort of game play as an adjunct to our regular RP games. This experience with my iPad, however, has left me less than enthusiastic.

Unfortunately Android and iOS lag behind the new PC code. I believe they're compatible with only 2.1.1

I believe someone mentioned; We will not see updated code until after April.

You can ask your friend if he still has the 2.1.1 code or if you go to http://artemis.eochu.com  , your friend will find all the information he needs on the compatible software. Once that happens I believe you'll be a very happy camper.

You must remember when the application tries to negotiate with the server that it's not compatible with, there is some data that will get stuck in the client software. (iOS)  hitting the home button allows you to escape from the application. That application is still in memory and locked up at the point you left it. It must be cleared. That's why you must double-click the home button and officially shut off the application. Then you can click the icon for a clean Application restart.

Don't forget to update your iPad today. There are a number of important security fixes. 9.2.1     settings, general, software update

This probably deserves its own topic.

When using Artemis on an iPad orientation is important. With the home button to the right and click on the client IP field the keyboard will slide up and the background with IP field will slide down hiding the information. With the home button to the left and you click on the client IP field the keyboard slides up and the background slides up so you can see the information. So the human work around, if you cannot see the ip Flip the iPad upside down.  That is until the code gets fixed.
