Hey people [smile]

Short version:
Is there any way to have two Science consoles?

Long version:
For a larp using Artemis, I need to split the Science job in two. One person would use the Science console to scan stuff and give directions for the ship, and another person would guide the fighters. The best way to achieve this would be to have two different Science consoles running at the same time. One person could scan stuff at the other side of the map, while the other person could zoom in on the fighters to give them directions. So, is there any way to have two separate Science consoles running at the same time? Or is there a way to have something like the Science console running on a separate computer?

Thanks for any help!

It's possible to use two science consoles, but there are some drawbacks - mostly in that there is only one science 'cursor' - if one clicks on something, the 'cursor' moves on the other console, too. That can interfere with the Scanning officer's ability to scan.

We do this pretty regularly online, and our solution is to use the Captain's map. That way the CAG can click around on the screen without changing the Science officer's target.

Thanks for the answer mwick [smile]

Captain's map sounds exactly like what I need!
Just to make sure: this is not the same thing as the main screen, is it?

And out of curiosity, how do you manage to set up two Science consoles?
Does it require adding some lines to the software's code?

Correct, it's not the same as the main screen. It's basically just a copy of the science screen without the ability to scan.

Adding two science consoles is actually as simple as having two clients connect and having both of them select 'science'. No code changes required!

The only console locked to one per client are Helm, Weapons and Engineering. The rest are open, so you can have as many Science, Comms and Captain's maps up as you like.In online games, it is common for almost everyone on the ship to have a Science or Captain's map just for reference. Those lucky enough to have two or even three monitors have their primary console on one, and Science on another.

The only thing to note is the point made above about clicking. It can get frustrating when you are reading intel on an enemy and it disappears because someone has click elsewhere.

I've edited this post, because I tested what I'm about to post here to make sure it's correct.

There are three consoles each capable of selecting a different object on the game map; Science, the Captain's Map, and the GM. The GM actually has a fourth selection cursor, (or reticle) used for selecting a location.

So, if you want to make sure two players can monitor the Science map without interfering with each other, use the Science and Captain's Map. Only Science will be able to scan, which prevents the two players from fighting over the enemy ship to scan. Note that normally if you try to scan something while another scan is ongoing, the first scan will be aborted. This is true even if you're the only one doing the scanning, but it can be a real headache if there's more than one Science console.

If there is more than one player ship, each gets their own Science and Captain's selection reticle, and they don't interfere with the other ships. However, if any Science console scans an enemy ship, all friendly ships will see the ship being scanned, and the additional intel will be available to all ships after the scan completes.

Since multiple player ships can be scanning different ships simultaneously, you don't have to worry about aborting an existing scan, and you can't scan a ship that is already being scanned. It can still help to assign a single player to do all the scanning for the fleet.

It should also be noted that multiple Comms players can also interfere with each other, including Comms on different ships. For instance, if two Comms players send conflicting orders to the same friendly ship, it will try to obey both!
