I don't have a cool name for my bridge yet - Maybe TSN Ironsides? (Ironsides is my often used other Interweb Handle).
I managed to get some video - not nearly enough of it - no idea what the hell my malfunction is that I keep forgetting to shoot more - of an event I ran for the local middle school this past weekend.

Not the best highlight of the lights, but you'll see shields strength up front in blue, energy in green. Engine effects on the sides, looks like the ship was at impulse during the video. Unfortunately the didn't turn on red alert, which was positioned just above the main screen, and they took no hits which would have shown on the light just below the main screen as flickering red or blue depending on whether its a shield or hull hit.

Great idea to have the dual bars on the front for energy and shield. Also that captain seems very enthusiastic. I am glad we are on the same side, I would not want to face her in battle.

Thanks so much everybody.

Yeah she was Bonkers!
I can't believe I didn't get any video of my daughter's crew. They did pretty good on a level 3 siege, and they had 15 minutes left so I threw them a siege with lots of lethal terrain and monsters. They absolutely lost the s*** when a dragon came out of nowhere and slammed into the ship. It was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. The screams of "we're all gonna die!!!!!!!"

Great bunch of kids.
Next step for me hardware wise is an upgraded control board to clean up the rats nest that's running the lights right now. And a rotating police style red light....and a strobe light.....and ohmygodthescopecreep!!!!!

On the software front I want to code the shield meter to strobe a bit when a shield hit happens. Haven't come close to figuring that one out yet. Will most likely have to completely retool that gauge effect in order to pull it off. But I like the challenge. Just have to get more disciplined about source control so I stop breaking other features in progress and have no idea where to roll back to.

I've been invited to run it at TotalCon in 2020, so I've got a good amount of runway to make these happen, plus whatever else I can do. Maybe some custom controls should be next. I've no doubt in my engineering ability to make the hardware go, and my code skills to implement - learned a lot doing this part so far - have no confidence in my ability to make it look nice. Some great examples in here for me to be inspired by though, for sure.

Artemis party happened. Everybody was raving about it and we went till past midnight.
We set up 2 ships, ran them independently for a bit, then put them together for co-op missions.Setup took FOREVER, I need to work on the process flow for doing it more efficiently.
My friends are now hounding me to build something semi permanent in the basement 😉 If I do that, AngelofRust, I'm going to be hitting you up for design advice on custom controls for sure.

After a few people left, I consolidated down to 1 ship, with 3 fighters, which everybody loved. One of the requests for the permanent bridge is to have a separate area where the fighter pilots would hang and play some other game like poker, until they get the scramble signal, when they would then just up and get to their stations and launch. I love the idea. Add in a rotating beacon, and maybe have DMXtools trigger an alert alarm audio along with it.
Snags I hit:
  • New TV didn't like the server's HDMI. No idea why, it worked on the projector before, and other monitors. Maybe because its going through a converter widget instead of being native. I'l definitely like to take a different device and use that for the sever at some point.
  • Couldn't find a few of the power cords for the laptops.
  • Network runs, I needed to get clear across the house on two cables to hook up to the router so that the handful of WiFi connected devices could talk to all the others that were on a couple of dumb switches.
  • My dog snagged one of those cables.....a mess ensued.
  • Coming up with places to mount some of the lights was problematic - solution is in progress
  • Joysticks were really weird. Like they weren't calibrated but the OS's said they were. Maybe its an Artemis setting?
Lessons learned:
  • Gaff tape is awesome
  • Need to build a portable frame to mount most of the lights to, to make setup much faster
  • Need to test various HDMI connections ahead of time, to verify compatibility

And long last, more video.

(These are from the development)

oops. wrong videos 😉
Here's the right ones.

Yeah, my daughter exclaiming "I blew something up!!!" was not of the highlights for me. As was my friend in the other room motivating his crew by blaring out "Keep Firing, Assholes!" in homage to Spaceballs.
My plans for next leveling are already afoot. Time to once more into the breach biting off more than I can chew. I DO have a year to prep for the convention I want to bring this to. To address the setup time issue, I'm thinking of building a frame that can be broken down, and transported to which the light bars will be already mounted. Just assemble, cable, done. Rather than trying to figure out where to mount them and fiddling with  giant rolls of gaff tape to get them in place.

The center can be left open for setting up in front of a TV or strung up with a screen for projecting the main screen.
Thoughts?
