THE GREAT SPACE RACE

Mysterious energy beings that had long hidden their existence have emerged from seclusion and approached the major governments of the galaxy about a friendly competition. They are hosting a space race! The USFP must send their best ship and most experienced crew to compete against the racers put forth by the Kraliens, Skaraans, Arvonians, and more! Who will be proven to be the fastest and greatest?

This is a unique mission script for Artemis 2.7.2. It should work on 2.7.1 too because I don't think I'm making use of any of the scripting changes between the two versions, but someone out there will have to try 2.7.1 (prob OK on 2.7.0 and 2.6.x too) and post their results below. I definitely know it won't work with 2.4 or below because I'm heavily using float variables. [wink]

This script has been pretty well play-tested by my local gaming group, but I'm still very interested in feedback to make it better. Try it out and let me know what you think! 😉

The question is, can you make it from Buoy 6 to Buoy 7 in less than 12 parsecs...

This looks like a lot of fun, I will have to give it a try.

I'm wondering what these changes are. Has that been shared anywhere yet?

I got that info from here (not sure how "official" this thread is): https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/2-7-2-released-10032650?&trail=15

And on second thought, I think I did address the specials "TeleBack" and "ShldReset" in the script. If that causes a crash in 2.7.1/2.7.0, you could just search for those lines and delete them. However, I suspect an unknown special would just be ignored.

If only I had known!!!! We had an Artemis party this weekend at my library and this would have been PERFECT!

I’ll have my sub bring it up next month since I can’t be there. It’ll give him something to keep the kids working on.

BTW, there is also a TNG mod version of this script available: https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1309469374&postcount=770&forum=309501

Would this work with multiple player ships or only a single ship?

No, I didn't code this for multiple ships. *BUT* it wouldn't be too much work to add in that functionality. So if there are a lot of requests for multiple ships, I could be convinced to work on that upgrade!

I played this in two instances:
1. With a group of kids/teens; they lost interest fast. We encountered one weird glitch (see below)

2. With a group of adult friends, one of whom is a top-rate engineer; they thought it was fun. We experimented with a variety of solutions for victory, encountered the same glitch each time, and came awfully close to winning with more than one method. (The favorite approach, though of dubious morality, was flying a missile cruiser and spamming unguided missiles. We ALMOST won...)

We never quite made it, although the last time that was only because our idiot weapons officer targeted the lead enemy ship after launching more than enough homing torpedoes to destroy it. (Who is said idiot, you ask? ....I’d prefer to remain safely anonymous, thanks.)

As for the glitch—as we were coming around the nebula toward buoy six it would kick every station off of the server and shut down their game. The server itself would continue running and we could reconnect just fine, but it happened every single time we ran the scenario, whether we took the short cut or went around.

Otherwise, a very different and fun game. Just wish there was more for comms to do.

This looks like a great change of pace and I'm going to try to get some play time with it soon.
