Since Artemis was released on Steam, the TSN RP Community has been growing steadily.
One of the issues we have had to face as our numbers increase is the one with server performance. We often found that when you start to get around 4 or 5 fully manned ships on the same server - with many of the officers running several clients - the game would start to lag to such an extent that it would be impossible to play. As a result, we would often split up into two groups, playing on separate servers.

This all changed yesterday, however, as one of our members has gotten his hands on a really kick-ass business server. We were suddenly able to let all of our officers take part in the same simulation at once - That is 34 officers spread out over 6 ships! It was an amazing experience, seeing everyone work together. I am really excited to do more simulations like this.

Has anyone else run simulations of this size? Tell us your story below!

And if anyone is interested in joining our group...

Lt-Cdr Bidderly here. Managing such a fleet with so many people while everyone performs as professional as it could get was truely an amazing experience, one I always dreamed of since I joined the community. Never been so immersed while playing Artemis, truely.

Thanks to everyone at TSN RP for making it possible!

I am proud to command such professional crews. Last night, the dream of seeing so many ships coordinate together so effectively was realised for the first time. All the things that we have developed as a community came together to make one impressive sight, a sight that can be seen in the screenshots above. Having six vessels go to warp at the same time and in formation, having them attack together in closely coordinated manoeuvres and sequences of firing... it was very impressive indeed.

Your pictures are very impressive, and I agree, the feeling of so many dedicated, expert crews working together is hard to top.  Well done, all.

What kind of server did you get your hands on there?
Or, more generally, what are the requirements per crew or so? Does anyone know?

One of our members worked out the general requirements and the demands that are made on the server. The server for the game itself was hosted by another member who had access to a seriously high-powered server connection. I am afraid I can't quote numbers (and if I did, I don't really know what I am quoting - the higher the better is my general understanding).

Up until now, we have managed to have 20 - 25 people join someone hosting out of their home (using a fibre-broadband line) and we have only just managed. We have tested it with different people from around the world, and 25 seemed to be the max. There is usually lag, and above 25 people, it can become almost impossible for helms officers to fly the ship effectively. With the server we used the other night, we managed 34 without any significant lag (I didn't notice any myself).

Although in those images below you can see six ships operating together, that only usually occurs when we fancy a 'big finale'. We gather together, launch a mass volley of ordnance, then finish off using beams.

More often than not, we split into 'battlegroups' - two to three ships working together in a particular part of the sector. It makes it easier to coordinate the overall movement of the ships (I order Battlegroup A to defend a particular area and Battlegroup B to take another). Each battlegroup then works together in that area, the ships within the battlegroup attacking heavier targets together (carrier fleets or torgoth fleets), or splitting up to deal with lighter targets (light elites or kralien fleets). I usually command one of the battlegroups, and I have my other Battleship Commander take charge of the other battlegroup.

Thanks. If I got that correctly, it's more about connection bandwidth than about CPU power or RAM size, correct? That's what I expected anyway. So in general, multi bridge games should be no problem in a LAN environment?

I would say that's not entirely the case. When I play live I can't have more than three crews even on LAN before my Internet starts working up lag.

Man, I can't believe I missed this! I ended up being without internet the whole weekend, which was rather annoying... I can't wait to be able to join back in with you all for another huge fight together! Stuff like this is stuff that I dreamed about since first joining the RP and I just had to miss it!

Yea, LAN games really run fine for the most part. The biggest issue would be if your router can handle all the data packets being sent back and forth (Wifi tends to have a hard time with this through my experiences of LAN play).

I really ment LAN games. With no Internet at all which could possibly lag. [wink]
