I was wondering if there was any planned support craft in the coming release?

Maybe something like a mobile repair and recharge ship that is unarmed but heavily armored, slow moving and playable.

Another idea I had was a science ship that enhances the scanning capabilities of ships in a certain radius and has the ability to scan two targets at once.

One other alternative ship that I thought would be fun to add to the game is a mine collector. Something to collect mines that are already in place. Allowing the relocation of mines and conversion maybe to nukes, combining 1 mine with 1 torpedo. Lightly armed with beams and one launch tube.

Just a couple suggestions for support craft that I think would be fun to play.

That's a pretty neat idea. I implemented something like this in a mission I designed back in 2014 and, essentially, this is what you have in the Deep Strike scenario (although it's really only an npc cargo hauler with some extra lines of code).

Scanning two objects at once likely requires that Thom changes a bunch of code which might lead to a ton of other problems. Alternatively, I would suggest enhanced speed for scanning which should really only involve a few extra lines of code.

I thought of something similar a while back. The down side is that once this type of ship is available, placing down mine fields is no longer a viable option and, if anything, is helping the enemy gain more firepower. I feel this might be a balancing issue.

In my Simple Sandbox I have an NPC Minelayer as a mission reward that can run around the sector and remove minefields, and then create one. Removing the minefield is kind of a shotgun affair; you send the Minelayer into the midst of it, and then it uses the destroy command to wipe out all the mines in a set radius. Picking up individual mines is currently impossible. (Even for player Mine Layers)

A Scout is really a support craft that extends the range of scanning. Repair ships isn't something that's ever been considered before, but it's an interesting idea. They could carry extra DamCon teams that could be transferred to other ships that have lost their complement.

You make me want to write a script to emulate that. 😃

I am glad to hear that these concepts are not completely out of line with the game and that others are supportive of the concepts.

As I was reading ryleyra's comment a thought struck me. There may be one additional limitation that would make the use of a mine collector (or if not a new ship an enhanced version of the mine layer) more balanced would be to have the mine layer/collector fire an EMP (or specialized weapon only available to that class of ship) and to either be able to target Mines or be able to detonate it at will so that the weapon could be fired into a group of enemies or a mine field and detonated without hitting anything. I may not be explaining it clearly and if so I apologize. The intent would be to disable the mines, permanently or temporarily. If the weapon were to be fired upon a field of mines, all mines within the blast radius would change to anomalies (or just deactivated mines) that the mine layer/collector could collect.

As I have no idea as to the complications that this would cause in programming my request may be quite impractical in terms of implementation. I enjoy the game as is but think that the addition of player controlled support ships would increase the options in terms of strategy and allow for greater cooperation between ships mirroring the cooperation of the crew.
