Hi all,

I wanted to take a minute to show you guys something that I'm working on right now.

[uiOo4Cm]

[okFZDLf]
I made this model a while ago for another game, but I figured that I would load it into Artemis to see how it worked out. I hope you'll agree with me, but so far I think it's looking pretty good...apart from a few problems.

One of my problems is that I do not know DeleD 3D Editor so well, and the import doesn't quite look right. There are a lot of lighting issues, faces that should be smooth do not look smooth...faces that shouldn't be smooth look smooth. I can't find an option for smoothing groups at all, so I don't know that it even exists. Is there anyone out there with experience in DeleD experience who can help me get these models in the game properly?

Also, does anyone know of a modding tutorial that describes the proper way of getting a ship in-game? So far I'm dealing with the occasional crash.

I have a Romulan Bird of Prey, a Klingon D-7 Cruiser, and the K-1 Station to import into the game.

Is there anyone who has the experience and the time to help me out here? [smile] Shoot me a message. Thanks.

Abs

Something about seeing the Enterprise is always awesome.

Looks good to me, except for the weird damage node action on the top right damage diagram.

I agree with you...this classic ship will always be one of the most beautiful, in my humble opinion. [smile]

Yea, I have no clue what that's about. Like I said, I only started this yesterday. Do you know if there's a tutorial/guide on how to mod properly?

No idea... I can just stand in awe as you guys make these awesome ships... Wish I could do it.

If there is a good TOS mod let me know.

Does it have as many enemies and bases as the latest Artemis?

Honestly, I would love to get this as a mod to replace one of the Artemis ships. Flying the Enterprise while blowing up Krelians would be AWESOME!

MarkBell's been maintaining the Star Trek TMP mod, which has got the kirk era ships, using the movie models, rather than TV show (if I recall correctly).

MarkBell's own mod is the Star Trek TNG mod, which is all the TNG and newer show ships.

Hunt through the mods sub-forum and you should see them

Once I get the model lighting issues sorted out, I'll release it as a standalone ship. Later I'll release the Romulans, Klingons, and base replacements. [smile]

Thanks for the tips. I've been looking at the source of the Into the Breach mod to see how a mod is setup, but I'll look into those as well. The thing is, I have no clue why it keeps crashing but I'm assuming that I haven't configured the ship damage/systems correctly. For some reason my rear shields keep dropping as well. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

The Into the Breach mod hasn't been updated for a while, so I'm not sure how well it's playing with the newest Artemis. The individual models, textures and definitions should function just fine though.

As far as DeleD CE goes, I'm not sure how much smoothing is going to get you. It's designed for relatively low poly models - and standard Artemis ships are pretty angular. 3DS Max it ain't.

For lighting, I started with the monochrome light map. Artemis doesn't multiply down, though, so the diffuse map needs to be baked into the light map to have colored shadow areas. The spec map seems to ignore color, at least.

What kinds of crashes are you finding? Is it repeatable or fairly random so far?

The internal file needs a bit of work [smile] The Ship Editor from the Artemis download page will get you started, although RussJudge helped make a basic hex editor for fine tuning.

Feel free to dissect my mod for reference, or the TMP mod since it's a simpler structure. You may need to still include the bio ships as a thing - there were a lot of crashes in testing until I found that it needed to be there, but that may have been fixed.

I had difficulty locating them. A mod list with functionality, date and features would be cool?

Here's an unofficial but pretty good list:

Thanks for the heads up, and I will definitely dissect your mod. Can I use it as a basic structure to get my mod off the ground?

Speaking of low-poly...is there a poly limit for the ships in the game? I've seen other mods have some ships higher than 10,000 polies, so I wasn't sure. With regards to smoothing, smoothing in DeleD appears to be the equivalent of TurboSmoothing in 3ds max...I was hoping that there would be a smoothing group equivalent. Seems like there isn't, so I'm going to try slicing apart my mesh where the smoothing ends to see if that fixes the crappy lighting that I'm getting. You can see it mostly around the engine and the engine pylon.

The crashes seem random. Sometimes it's right off the bat as soon as I start my server...other times the game keeps going for a bit.

Lol...are the red dots the internal file? I swear I had the Ship Creator make the internal file for me...is there a way to do it manually instead?

Thanks for the tips on the Bio Ship, though I didn't remove anything and have started just by replacing the Artemis ship entry.

If you have some spare time, MarkBell, I'd be happy to share my file with you and get your feedback/mentorship on it. Just PM me your email, and I'll send you a link.

@ Longbowman1346 - the ones marked good for 2.0 (TNG, TMP) are good for 2.0, but only TNG has been maintained for 2.1.1 (I need to tweak up TMP...).  The older mods haven't been updated for 2.0 as of yet, as far as I know.

@ Abs - Feel free to use my mod however you like [smile]  Mine is actually based very much on the TMP mod (which came before my own, and I've been maintaining since TreChipman's untimely passing).  The structures of the two mods are very similar, regardless.  My total mod package includes BGM, sound and visual UI replacements, while the TMP mod sticks mainly to just ships.

There's no poly limit that I'm aware of, but the game can choke a bit on high res models.  I toyed with a high res NSEA Protector (~2MM polys I think?) and the game loaded it.... eventually [tongue]

Well, if you can semi-reliably replicate the crash, let us know - I had a bear of a time trying to sort out a bug when making missions, when it turned out I had a ship definition wrong.  It didn't come up until the game tried to render it, then choked and died.

Yep!  Little red dots on the overhead ship are typically damaged internal nodes.  You should see something pretty similar on your engineering display.  The Ship Creator creates a basic array of internal systems and nodes, which you can add to manually or move around.  It's imprecise, tricky to do, and hard to undo.  Fortunately, RussJudge and I sorted out the hex file for the .snt and we worked out a way to manually input nodes based on ship locations.  Here's the thread: http://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/editing-snt-files-6751214  and let me know if you'd like my template file (I should be able to find it...)
