Introducing the first batch of missions for the Stellar Tactical And Reconnaissance Corps. While every mission involves combat, Artemis is a combat sim after all, each missions isn’t just a case of blowing up the red dots. Each has a short self contained plot, some big and some small, putting she ship into various situations.

These missions are taken from the Ardent’s four year mission exploring the “Shadow Patch”, an area of unknown place that became part of USFP territory after the 2191 TAK treaty.

As a part of the STAR Corps it’s your job to scout ahead, to seek out new allies and new worlds. As such you will be in first contact situations, diplomatic negotiations, promoting the USFP, assisting new USFP Colonies and Transports. You will find a range of alien life forms, from child sized to XXXL. Artificial Intelligences hostile, friendly and very very friendly. Not to mention defending the USFP from whatever nasties lurk in the shadows of the “Shadow Patch”.

The missions can be played in any order, this is just the order I uploaded them in. Ghosts of the past isn’t finished yet but will try and get back to it when I’m feeling better.

I will try and film a proper mission briefing for the STAR Corps missions when I can too.

Let me know what you think.

I'm a rookie... are there any prerequisites I have to follow, or do I just unzip these and drop the contents in the mission folder?

Just unzip drop in and play.

And thanks for being the first to leave a comment Wlogan. My missions were beginning to feel a little unloved [wink] .

Between you and me (and anyone else who cares to read)... I have found these forums less than inviting.  Every post I've made (and several I've read by new members) has been met with "don't bother the developer," "why would you want to do that?" "I don't see the point," "I wouldn't waste my time" type responses.  I've been very underwhelmed by this site's interest in embracing new members.  Seems like a private club and I'm uninvited.

Well welcome to the STAR Coprs where everyone's invited. [wink]

The forums used to be chattier, they seem to just be a little quiet right now.

Let me know how you get on with the missions Wlogan and if you have any problems let me know. [smile]

Arrew,
I tried the first two Ardent missions with a full crew tonight, and they were fantastic.  I'm looking forward to trying these out!

One thing, the link to Ghosts of the Past doesn't look like it posted right.

Thanks for making these!

losdelfuego, he mentioned in the original post "Ghosts of the past isn’t finished yet but will try and get back to it when I’m feeling better" so I guess we gotta wait :-)

I'm still assembling my permanent setup for playing Artemis. Tonight I'm gonna play the first mission or two using my desktop PC, laptops, ipads, and a surface pro 2.

Hey Arrew. I can't wait to try these out along with your other missions. I have been really busy with work but in about two weeks I will be free. I will send you what I think of them afterwards..but I can't wait to play these all seem great.

Thanks everyone.

PM me what you think, in terms of mechanics and plot.

Like Wlogan said Ghosts isn't finished yet. I was really enjoying making the missions but after making so many it's getting a bit tedious. That plus the flue means that Ghosts is unfinished at the moment.

Special thanks to CptHermi for giving me the files to make planets.

Bonus points if you recognise the speech in Legacy Of War, by the way.

Added 1 thru 13 to the User-Created Missions list on the wiki.

Some questions as I'm preparing to add these to the Mission Pack download:

  • Mind if I name them like the zip files are named? That'll keep them grouped together in the mission list. The actual XML files are MISS_Ardent...xml and not MISS_STAR01...xml etc.
  • I assume I can edit the genericMesh commands to point them to the correct folders; some meshes point to .dxs and .png files in folders which don't exist.
  • Legacy of War: contains a reference to a generic mesh and textures in a MISS_Ardent_Breadcrumbs folder, but I think it's included in this mission folder instead.
  • Pleasure Planet: requires a mesh file from Kubia Lost, line 12.
  • The Masters: requires a mesh from MISS_Planets, line 79 and 85, but I think it's actually included. I'll test it.
I think with these tweaks I can add all these into the mission pack--we're about at 40 missions now!

Apologies about any mix up.

Legacy Of War had a name change. The command prompt looking for Breadcrumbs is looking for the old, and much more terrible, name. I have fixed the uploaded file. You can now download it and play it fine.

I basicaly made a big catalogue of planets for me to choose and then copy and past into missions called MISS_Planets. Kubia and Masters is looking for that. Will correct them also. Just download and play as normal. [smile]

We tried the first of these missions this eve, and while we failed, it is far and away the best of the scripted missions I've tried. Lots of work for comms, and great pacing.

Do you have a suggested difficulty? We died on our run through.

What mission did you try Moofrank? Children?

Probably my best in terms of story and choices the captain has to make. Did your captain make the tough call?

I had an idea that Children could lead to a short campaign. But while the idea is there the time to make it isn't.

As to level I have completed them all Solo.... but that was on difficulty 1. I expect a full crews to do much better then me, and consider myself to be a poor player actually. So I assumed that a full crew could play at a much higher level. What level that is depends on what level you normally play at I suppose. But I would recommend being more energy conservative than normal.

The STAR Missions are about short simple stories so if in doubt lower the difficulty right down. They are meant for fun and a chance to RP more than as a challenge of a crew's skill, so feel free to go as low as 1 as I did.

But it's really a matter of how you like to play...

Also, as a note, in Children of Carnage the enemy is quite different.

It's my understanding that most Captains and crew have the luxury of hanging around enemy fleets, scanning them all, taking a break and then only when the time is right attacking. That's a bit slow for my liking and I know some crewmen get bored of this style of game play. I wandered how Captains would react to a different kind of enemy with different capabilities.

Personally I think the default enemy is too slow, don't you think? I think they could all do with a speed enhancement. In the current situation, as it is in the game, it seems to me that the TSN have such a massive technological lead on the other races they they should just conquer everyone.
