I have been thinking about some means to keep spectators interactive while playing down at our gamestore... The android client is the major inspiration.

How about adding Fighter bay to some of the major classes or adding a new carrier class ship to the game. Then, get this... allowing folks spectating to join the ship via android device and control limited duration launched fighters and send receive information from the comms guy. I could imagine multiple roles of drones to choose from such as Fighter/Bomber or even boarding boat. The fighters can despawn if left behind costing fighter bay slots restored though DS bases, and the client can be only fed with regional information(potentially tied to sensor power) to keep the system demand light.

Anyhow its a crazy idea, figured I would loft it since I am far from a codemonkey.

There are fighters in the TSN mod and I've made a fighter script.

But making it so individual spectators, i guess you mean observer mode, controlling individual fighters would have a lot of issues. It's a no go scripting wise. Mod and coding wise I don't know. But what would happen if they left the game? Does that mean each whip could only have one fighter? If there were no "spectators" would the fighters just sit there?

If a spectator wanted to play why wouldn't they just make and spawn in a ship?

It's an interesting idea and a lot of use are interested in fighters. Hence my script and the TSN Group's mod. To my understanding the BSG Group has probably done the best where a ship is essentially a fighter. (I think that's right anyways.)

Fighters and Boarding Parties have been considered before. The biggest problem with these ideas is that these are special features that don't fit the division of teamwork concept of the game. Helm, Weapons, Science, Engineering and Comms all work together to control the ship, but a console running a fighter would be independent of the ship. Not that that's a bad thing, but if every ship had them, it would dominate the game.

However, I think that as an additional concept for a special ship, it could work. There are rumors that carriers will be released for Artemis eventually, either as a new race in the main game (the Ximni) or as an expansion pack. (Meaning you would buy it separately and somehow upgrade your license or your ship's server) This upgrade would probably include individual piloted fighters, and possibly a new console to act as C&C. (Although Comms or Science could take on the role just as well)

As for Boarding Parties, while I wouldn't want to completely change the playstyle of the game, a new ship type like a Troop Transport might be interesting. The ship could come with a Transporter System, and a console could control troop deployment and combat on the other ship, or repel boarders on the player ship. Of course, if the players get Boarding Parties, then the enemies would have to gain that ability too. Perhaps a new enemy race could be added that are hand to hand fighters...

As for getting spectators involved... while it sounds interesting, I kind of think spectators want to be spectators. If they wanted to be players, as Arrew said, they could just load up a ship and start playing.

It would be easier if a spectator could pop in as a one-man fighter if he wanted to. Or pull a Commodore Decker and steal a shuttle, which he uses to make a kamikaze run on a bad guy. [biggrin] The shuttle could be weak enough that it wouldn't effect the balance, unless there were a whole bunch of spectators.

If it were just for a specific mission boarding actions could be scripted?

Missions like Children Of Carnage or Blind The Giant.
