Hey all. Just came across this game. I currently have an “x wing vs tie fighter lab” which is made up entirely of old Dell Dimension desk top towers. There are 8 of them. When I formatted and reinstalled them with xp Servoce pack 2 I used the service Code on them to go rob dell and download drivers for Nic, graphics, audio, etc. they run x wing vs tie fighter flawlessly over my lan. I also have X wing alliance on most of them. However 7 of the 8 can not run Artemis because of this message error when I try to start it. “No direct3D device available”. Am I just out of luck? They are all running Direct x 9. I read about 3D analyzer and installed that on one device but got a weird message saying “failed to initialize dll” when it started up. Is that something configured wrong? Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Do the towers have graphics cards?  or just software graphics?  DX9 is required, but so is Shader 2.0 - do you have a way to check if you have that shader support?

The vga seems to come right out of the motherboard on most, so I guess it’s integrated and not a separate card.

Not looking promising then.  Can you see if the graphics supports Shader 2.0?  I recall that being the hangup on several of my boxes five or more years ago.

Thanks for the response. It’s gonna be hard to figure out. Most of them are so old that when I went to the Dell site and looked them up there were “non specific drivers”... I guess like a catch all. If I entered the service code no drivers popped up, so I had to go with the “general drivers” for each particular model number. I’m gonna see if I can find some cheap graphics cards, because I’m not scrapping the whole lab because xwing is flawless. If I figure anything out I will post it. Thanks again.

What model of Dimension are they?

Keep in mind that DX9 & Shader v2 dates back as far as 2002 so it should be pretty easy to find a suitable GPU.

Actually went dumpster diving and pulled some old graphics cards. Got 4 running and added my ipads, so we’re at a working place. Various model deminsions.
