Today, the USN achieved what was thought of as impossible. After weeks of preparation, the USN beat a level 11 with all enemies at 220%. As far as we can tell, this is currently the highest level successfully beaten with stations left alive. With three ships (all short on crew), the USN cleared the scenario with only one station lost. If you would like to attempt the same, the settings we used are as follows:

Difficulty - 11

Scenario - Siege

Terrain - Many

Lethal Terrain - Many

Friendly ships - Many

Monsters - Many

Anomalies - Many

Sensors - Unlimited

Network Update - 410

Allied systems - 100%

Enemy systems - 220%

We did this with three ships. The conclusion is summed up in the picture posted below.

The crews that participated are as follows:

USN Liberator (Battleship)

Captain Feltes

Sub-Lieutenant Douglas (Douglas01)

Sub-Lieutenant Gomric

Ensign Ashkb

Midshipman Aposine

USN Horizon (Light Cruiser)

Commander del-Pino

Sub-Lieutenant Mimo (Yvosaurus)

Ensign Blacklocke (CosmicCandi)

Ensign CP44

Ensign Hikarr

USN Basroil(Scout)

Captain Corwin

Ensign Graybeard (DupeOfURL)

Ensign Xira

Midshipman Amahlaka

Overall, it was a successful session; and we hope to continue pushing the bounds of what is possible in Artemis.

Captain Feltes

USN Liberator

As always, it was a blast playing with my USN crewmates.  We even had a few new members (the Midshipmen) that survived their first encounters at this epic magnitude.  [smile]  I look forward to further pushing the envelope!

I was happy to be fill-in Engineer on the Basroil for this feat.  Had quite the busy time!

A hint to anyone trying these settings - those enemy fighters are FAST!

Haha. We hope to be running level 11's at 300% soon. That I would count as the equivalent of a level 12.

Don't worry, we sang Database and I'd like to teach the world in your honor. Funnily enough, one of the new players was with us for that. It was his first multiplayer match... we didn't scare him off!

Because I know Feltes likes to beat the odds and Corwin likes to fly into the jaws of death I’ve made a level 12 mission for you guys.

Kind of like a challenge.

It spawns a level 12 amount and configuration of ships and then improves the ship and fleet AI, then gives everyone that can have them elite powers.

No new enemies or anything special. But it’s very tough.

I might stick it in a separate thread so that the Level 12 challenge is open to any and all groups that think they can take it...

What do you think?

Great! We were planning on doing your mission next week (spoilers!), but we didn't test it so we didn't know what to expect in terms of difficulty.

When dealing with challenging simulations, we found that the problem is not the number of stenght of enemy ships (that is, provided the server can handle them without crashing) but their speed. As we boost the enemy settings we find that we simply can't deal with all the fronts that we suddenly find open and we have to either sacrifice most stations, or spread out and lose them anyways. Now, add there strong shields and beams, so that you can't really hurt an enemy fleet without getting wrecked, and we have an issue. During an experiment a couple of weeks ago (by experiment I mean that we were messing around with Rew's sandbox and spawning a lot of enemies) we confirmed that we can deal with any number of enemy ships, even while spawning more than we destroy, indefinetely as long as we don't face an inmediate attack on our bases.

To beat this kind of missions we had to change the entire focus of our tactics. Frontal engagements, unless one is really good at tanking are not worth the amount of damage. We are now trying to use delaying tactics and engage enemy fleets indirectly. Not only this means less damage, but also we are kiting those fleets away from our stations, and that means the stations are fairly safe through the entire simulation. After that, it's just a matter of time. And even so, all our simulations are done under or around the  25 minutes mark. If we were to try a direct engagement, we would lose even slower than we would win by delaying the enemy.

What mission were you going to do, the Countdown one? What day and time? If you do, do you think someone could record it. I'd love to see it in action.

It spawns more ships if there are more player ships so test it with multiple player ships and let me know how it works.

I am really super keen to learn more about the new tactics you guys are using. I know about attacking enemy fleets from behind so they head away from the stations but it seems like you're doing so much more than that now. Any chance you guys will write a Strategy Manual or could you explain more?

We will be getting a recording of the level 11 220% at the next session, and I plan on releasing it with raw audio (most likely only my ship sadly) and doing a dub-over (hopefully with feltes and del-pino) explaining the tactics and thought processes at the time as we were going through it.

The one we were planning on doing was the mission you sent off to us a little while ago. Not sure which it is tbh. Will be a fun surprise.

Just trying to think what I missions I sent you...

Carriers (was more just a test).
New Enemies.
Neutron Trap (Solar wind test for the expanded sandbox.)
And I linked you Countdown Detonation.

I'd recommend countdown detonation. It has a youtube briefing and an intelligence report, not to mention it's better.

I think a video with your cometary is a great idea. Explaining why and what you're doing. Look forward to it.
