Anyone know how I can get my laptop to work as the server instead of just as a client?

What kind of trouble are you having? It won't start the server at all? As in the program crashes when you click 'start server' - or something like the other computers can't connect to your machine after you've started the server? Describe in more detail and we can probably help you get it figured out.

Other computers can't connect to the server if my computer starts the server.

So that's probably more of a network setup problem than anything related to the game or your computer specifically. What sort of setup are you playing in? All on the same LAN? Over the internet?

We're on the same LAN. I've never tried to be a server over the internet yet. I've been wondering if maybe its a weird firewall issue. I use McAfee, and changed settings that I think should allow it to work, but that's one area of computers that I don't know much about.

I'd bet it has to do with your local machine's firewalls, then. It's possible both McAfee and Windows are both running Firewalls, try making sure Windows firewall is turned off, McAfee has inbound open for port 2010 for both TCP and UDP. If you're working as a client, you should have outbound open, so no worries there.

I tried turning Windows Firewall off completely, and I double checked McAfee and confirmed that both incoming and outgoing ports were opened, but it still didn't work.

I'm afraid I haven't used McAfee too much so I can't provide any specific advice there, but I don't know of anything else that would be stopping the connection from getting established. Are you sure you're typing in the correct IP for your machine? Are you all connecting over WiFi to the same router?

Try this:
Run your server.
Attempt client connection.
Back on the server Alt-TAB ... see if Windows or one of your firewalls is asking permission for an outside connection. I've been seeing this since Windows 8 (through 8.1, 8.1U, and Win 10), even if you elect to let the install set up your firewall for you.
Once you grant it permission, you won't see it again until you reinstall or update your server's Artemis software.

Alt+Tab (On Win 10) pulls up a thing that lets you choose what window to focus on. (I'm sure it has a name, but I don't know it.)

Did you ever get this fixed? We had a similar problem on one of our PCs right before Armada. I think one of the crew got it fixed. I'll ask them and see if they have any insight.

Ok so I had our problem backwards.  We had a computer that would be the server all day but wouldn't be the client despite our best efforts.

The issue started with a computer right before armada.  After talking to some of the crew they said that we just left that computer at home for armada and the next time we played it worked fine.

Sorry I couldn't be any help.

@Morlane do you know how to see if the firewall is trying to make a connection on Windows 10?

Got it working! used a combination of these two videos:

and

Port forwarded port 2010 (by watching vid 1) at IP 10.0.0.8 (found by using vid 2)
In the artemis.ini file, I found the forceAddress setting, changed it to be:

; SETTING: forceAddress
; USE: when set, this address will always be used on the client connection screen
; ACCEPTABLE: any valid IPaddress or URL; just like what you type to connect to the server
; forceAddress=192.168.1.102

; I MADE THIS CHANGE, MAKES COMPUTER WORK AS SERVER
forceAddress=10.0.0.8

Then I used 10.0.0.8 as the client address, and it worked!
