Any plans on throwing up an internal Mumble server so we can have coms between ships?  I can bring my small server if needed, but it can run on almost anything.  Just get a few mics for coms/capt and it's easier enough to configure.

I wonder if any bridges have mics or if it would make sense to find a few cheep ones on Amazon to use for the event.

We did this during the War Server game at Armada 1.  Pretty sure we did it again for the big multi-ship game at 2.  At 1, BatSteve installed a teamspeak server on the war server machine and the comms officers all connected to it.  Most I think had a headset for their phones or just used the built in mic in the laptop webcam.

This should definitely happen again, and I will be encouraging my comms officer to bring a headset (planning to build in a mic jack on our comms console, probably offer 3.5mm, Bluetooth, and USB).

Thematically, I am against any station but Comms being able to talk to other ships directly.

We will be bringing a headset. Hopefully others will as well. One headset per 6 people isn't very many

You can run teamspeak server locally. At ZappCon, we had each of the coms stations use a headset to talk back and forth. Spacebar seemed to be an easy push to talk and didn't interfere with the game.

I do VoIP phones as a profession, so I realize almost nobody has this kind of hardware/software setup in their house... but I hosted an Artemis party at my house with a pair of bridges.  The two bridges' comm officers each had a Cisco phone next to their station, with a soft button to dial the other bridge.  One bridge had to "hail" the other comm bridge, and the comm officer could take the hail or put it on speaker for the whole bridge to hear.

It would be kind of rad (though a tad expensive) to have this kind of rig at Armada.  Every bridge with their own phone/comm station.  Orrrrrrrrrrrr Teamspeak since it's free.  Whatev.

Two-way radio is the answer!  They're Wireless, No server needed and they look cool to boot.  It is what we used last year during the multi bridge battle because the TS server didn't end up working.

I'm bringing plenty don't worry.  :-)

That being said I'm down for whatever.  I know people are more accustomed to TS style comms.

So... Mumble is 100% free (FOSS) and will work without any internet access at all.  Easy install and configuration and is technically better than TS.
You can also run Mumble on your phone if you really wanted to...
