Wanted to share the solution in case others have the problem.

Problem: trying to launch Artemis via a script such as powershell or bat file would not work.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis\Artemis.exe"

Result: nothing seemed to happen.

Fix: change the directory first
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis"
artemis.exe

Result: the game launched

Not sure why that's needed but I fiddled around for an hour before I thought of that.

Why: I have a set of computers dedicated for running artemis so i wanted the game to launch at login but with a delay so that windows could have time to settle in first. One in particular threw an error everytime without the delay. think its the video card/drivers/software that wasnt ready in time.

delay_artemis.bat
TIMEOUT 10
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis"
artemis.exe

Yup. I think I have to assume it expects to find artemis.ini, controls.ini, "dat\*" etc in "the current directory"
"cd into the directory and run the exe" is roughly what's happening when you "double click" on the EXE icon too.

If anyone is considering doing this on Linux (with WINE), see http://noseynick.org/artemis/nebula/
In particular, "artemis.sh" in there, which does a fairly complicated "find the Artemis directory, cd into it, tweak some config files and stuff, then "wine Artemis.exe"
