I've noticed that there are keybindings for "selecting" in the science station (select the closest ship, select the next ship, etc), but none of the keybinding lists I've consulted has an option for "target the nearest ship" at the weapons station.  Is there a way to do this using only the keyboard?

Thanks in advance.

Sawbones - please allow me to point you to Ryleyra's  {unofficial} Artemis Wiki.  Got a TON of info here  --

So, in skimming down this page, I did NOT see a Target Nearest Enemy key.  Fascinating.

Usually, targeting nearest is good idea, but I do recall a time we had 2 Kraliens ahead.  We were behind the nearer one, so he was no threat {out of his beam arc}, BUT the other guy had us in his sights.  So, we blew him away first.  Then came back for the other as he was still turning.  #HeShouldHaveSurrendered

Hi DupeOfURL,

Thanks for the link.  I've been through that wiki (a few times), but I was optimistically holding out hope that there was a binding that got missed.

Weapons Target Nearest has been pretty reliably on most development request lists for some time. I'd put a note in about it on the 2.4 development request thread in the Development section.

OK, good to know that it's not just something I'm missing. I'll add a note as you suggest.  Thanks!

Not mine, I just took ownership of it. [biggrin]

(In other words, I'm just the most common editor at this time)

One alternative I've suggested, in case Thom believes Target Nearest would make Weapons too easy, would be for the console to be able to target an enemy by typing its name, or even just the first letter of its name. You'd have to hunt down the proper letter key, but it would give you a keyboard interface.

That might start overlapping existing keybindings pretty quickly - there's half a dozen keybindings (excluding the number keys) that might overlap. It might get really interesting if the enemy is a Q (toggle shields), L (lower shields), or B (toggle auto beams) [smile]

So, use the same interface as Jump drive, Tab to open the interface, type in the ship ID, Return to select it. Or Alt+char or Shift+char (redefining Torp to Energy) if you want to stick with a single keypress.

Remember, the SIMPLEST solution would be for Thom to just implement Closest Contact, Next Contact and Previous Contact, just like on the Science station. I'm suggesting a Plan B. [biggrin]
