What are others using for there Joysticks?

I have "joy2key" ( third party free app ) running with a MS Sidewinder joystick to convert buttons to key presses on the Helm PC.

I would like a throttle to control impulse speed so I could have climb and dive as an action when pulling back or pushing forward.

Has anyone had success, and what make and models are you using?

Hum, coulda sworn I posted a reply to this... I use a PS3 controller that I use joy2keys and motionjoy (to emulate an Xbox controller as the PS3 controller doesn't have plug and play capabilites and needs to be emulated as an Xbox 360 controller, which does) on. In terms of setting it all up, if you go into the controls file you can bind various functions of each station to various buttons on the joystick.

For binding the climb/dive, I have that set to my R2 and L2 keys, which are apparently an axis instead of buttons. If you wanted to you could change the axis it reads as to whatever axis you're impulse is and change impulse to be another axis, if you have one. If not, you can bind impulse to your buttons using the increase impulse and lower impulse commands that are bound to the w and s keys. You can do the same with all of the other various functions in the game, rendering the use of joy2keys useless unless if you have some point of hat keys, such as the D-pad on my PS3 controller. Do note that Artemis only natively supports 8 joystick buttons though, so you will need to bind the rest with Joy2Keys.

As for my personal setup on my PS3 controller, here's a image of what the buttons are on a PS3 controller if you are unaware: http://flatfootfox.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/PS3-Mapping.png

The only thing that image doesn't show is that R2 and L2 are axis 2 and that pressing in on the joysticks are Joy_4 and Joy_5 for the left/right joysticks respectively (L3 and R3 respectively).

So, what I bound directly to Artemis using the controls file was as follows:
Joy_0/Triangle: Dock
Joy_1/Circle: Reduce Warp
Joy_2/X: Increase Warp
Joy_3/Square: Raise Shields
Joy_4/L3: Increase Zoom
Joy_5/R3: Decrease Zoom
Joy_6/L1: Reverse
Joy_7/R1: Raise/Lower Shields
Axis 0/Left Joystick Up and Down: Impulse
Axis 1/Left Joystick Left and Right: Turning
Axis 2/L2 and R2: Climb and Dive

As for buttons I could not use, I bound the rest using Joy2Keys. The bindings are as follows:
Joy_8/Select: Info (Mainscreen Control)
Joy_9/Start: Tactical
Hat Up/D-Pad Up: Front View
Hat Left/D-Pad Left: Left View
Hat Right/ D-Pad Right: Right View
Hat Down/D-Pad Down: Rear View

The only thing I could not fit in in terms of Helm controls was Long Range on screen, which I could have done if I didn't have both a shields up and shields up/down button, but that helps a lot when weapons and I go and start to both press it at the same time (I just spam Square and even if weapons accidentally lowers them, they will be right back up) and for solo play or when I double as weapons, I use R1 to raise and lower shields.

Anyways, so yea, if I were to change impulse to be Axis 2 and Climb/Dive to be Axis 0, it would all work out to be as you wanted, but if you don't have a third axis, you can always bind it to Increase Impulse and Lower Impulse as two separate buttons.

Thanks Pupbrad,

But I am looking for a Joystick and Throttle where setting the Throttle would move the impulse speed of the ship up and down based on where the Throttle is currently. It is cool to know you can get the Video Game style remote to work, but I want it to feel less like a video game, and more like your flying a starship.

[aftersepare2]

I just need to know if anyone has gotten this to work yet, so I have a model number to look for. There are some hella expensive ultra real 500 button do it all combos out there that would be overkill for artemis, but I think people would "get it" on throttle up for impulse and down to slow down. The issue is when you go to warp in the game, it pushes you to 100% impulse, would dropping out of warp with the throttle at zero then drop you to zero speed?

(p.s. picture is sample I grabbed online, I do not have this.)

I've got one of these (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Contour-ShuttlePRO-V.2/1983676.aspx?cm_mmc=ShoppingFeeds-_-GoogleBasePromo-_-Keyboard/Mice/Input%20Devices/Mice%20and%20Trackballs-_-1983676_Contour%20ShuttlePRO%20V.2_COT-00499-0&gclid=CInJkIqShboCFWuCQgodmgIAeg) I picked up randomly.  If I can find it (just moved to a new apartment) then it's destined to be my designated Helm control!

Ah, forgot to mention the impulse controls. No, as far as I know there is no way to do that. There's been several requests for it, so I'm sure that all will be included in a future update.

I have it working fine on a Saitek AV8R-01.

I spent the last couple hours tweeking it . I have throttle 2 mapped to Impulse, i do not think warp can be mapped to an analog yet. Maybe a 3rd party might help here. The warp modes i have mapped to the switch/buttons and same with loading and firing torps.

Here is what i use[Saitek-AviatorJoystick-S261]

EDIT: i downloaded joy2pad and tested out mapping some things to it i now can control the warping with one throttle and the impulse on the other. I am gonna experiment with using the hat control as a mouse for weapons manual aim.

Once dropped it resets to the impulse speed you had at start of warp. I believe it checks the throttles current axis constantly or at least ever couple milliseconds.

Either way once i bring throttle 1 down from warp to zero it returns impulse the spoti have throttle 2.

Wait, so you got warp to work in the same way impulse works on your setup? Do tell!

OK so the stick i have has 2 throttles. In artemis control.ini i have this setup.

ADD                            =           0.5

That sets up throttle 2 as impulse. Now in the joy2key setup i have throttle 1 setup to press 1,2,3 or 4 at 3%,25%,50%, and 90% respectively.

SO warp is like this based on % of throttle a button gets pressed by joy2key.
1= 3%
2= 25%
3=50%
4= 90%

Now an issue is sometimes it dosent detect the "0% = space" so i simple setup a thumb button to end warp.

Ah, that's actually quite ingenious! I'll need to keep that in mind and try setting it up sometime.

Nice.

Now I need a throttle to test this. Thanks for the feedback

But can you dock with throttle set yo absolute? I've had problems with my Saitek Cyborg v1 sticks with their throttle such that I cannot dock when throttle is set to absolute

I have not had that issue of not being able to dock with this joystick. It all functions just fine.

Thrustmaster T-Flight X Hotas is the one I use. It looks like that one (has throttle and stick) but the bases are unified. With the right settings on the "controls" file, I have it set up so that I don't ever have to touch the keyboard or mouse as the helmsman.
