I went digging through the forums looking for examples, but it was a cursory search. I know we have the "Rosette" badge for TSN (https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/tsn-logo-and-badges-8484024?pid=1295455154).

Do the various alien races have insignia or flags?

Not sure if this has come up in cosplay. If we don't have any yet... any objections if I do some spitballing?

This is something we definitely need in the Artemis universe. In fact in the 100+ years of the Artemis timeline I would say we need a bunch of them with different meanings for every faction and empire.

For example, in the 20th century Germany used a lot of iconic symbols for the state and its institutions. These include the heraldic eagle, the Iron Cross, the Reichslader, the Wolfsangle, the swastika, the cross, the SS bolts, and the black sun. Some of these are associated with Nazis and so lost use after WWII but others have been around for a thousand years.

In the same way the Artemis Universe's various empires and factions need a lot of different iconography. The Skaraans alone could probably use about a hundred corporate logos.

The United States has a flag, obviously, but the US Navy has numerous emblems that generally combine symbols like anchors, eagles, ribbons, shields, and sometimes stars and stripes.

Several times we have reached out to graphic artists to cook up something, but never wholeheartedly. The "Rosette" was something Mark Bell cooked up and everyone seems to like it.

I wanted to jump in and add to this thread. I enjoyed Mike's discussion of the subject during TSN Armada Online when discussing the need for more iconography, etc. for Artemis universe factions. I think it would be fun to put some ideas on paper, so I'll chime in here with a few sketches as inspiration strikes.

For Armada V, Normandy was going to have their shiny new future-according-to-the-1970s costumes. Taking a cue from Hyperion, these costumes are coats that can be worn over street clothes to give the right effect. For the design, I was inspired by my two favorite 1979 sci-fi movies (hint, one is about a mysterious, dangerous entity from deep space that threatens the lives of the entire crew; the other is called Alien). The color scheme for the coats was made to feel at home in either movie.

The patches were produced by MRKArtisticThreads:

I really enjoy the community around Artemis roleplay where each crew offers their own take on the universe, which I feel adds to the richness of storytelling and fun around the game. When at Armada, I get the sense that I am catching a glimpse of a large, diverse organization where a number of different sectors and/or points in history are represented. Normandy is meant to be a sort of throwback sci-fi ship with '70s uniforms and buttons/analog controls.

I made badges for the costumes, one for each job:

Finally, I also made a dedication plaque that includes a variant of Mark's TSN rosette. Just to make sure I irked Mike's grammatical sensibilities, it spells out USFP -- I figure language is pretty malleable, so who knows, maybe it'll be legit in 200 years.

As I've noted, the Artemis logo itself has been the only consistent bit of iconography we had for years. And that is presumably specific to the ship "Artemis" itself. I actually don't mind the idea that the game suggests the ships name (and others) for you, even though you have the option to make up your own name. Since you play the crew of the ship, cooperatively, it can be said the only "character" in the game is the ship herself. So the Artemis logo ties all that together.

What I think we could use is a consistent logo for each of the stations, like your badges. Star Trek had their departments, which had a dedicated icon as well as a color, but while there have been station badges with all kinds of logos, they've pretty much been designed from scratch.

I like Mark's TSN badge and I agree than an "official" badge was badly needed. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't feature the game logo, as that would have identified it as part of the in-game universe as well, but the chevrons are also a game element, so that's fine. And I think Clavestone's "cracked skull" logo for the Pirates has been widely accepted to the point that it might as well be official as well.

That's pretty much it, though. We have nothing on any of the alien races, except for some concept art and a description of their society and biology.

Since last September, challenge coins have been given out by certain community leaders in recognition of special achievement by a person who plays the game, participates in building the community, and as an award to improve morale. Although they aren't many in circulation, they do exist and finding a person with one of these coins on their person can be very rewarding.

Be careful if you issue a coin check, you may end up buying everyone a drink.
