No, because it's tactical's job.

Except when I as Helm am about to engage warp, I will drop shields prior to engaging warp to save energy (unless we're in combat - then I let Tactical do it).

What do players with more formal training think about this "acting on my own initiative?"

If I am Helm I call if I am touching shields, other wise it is tacticals job.

There was a little debate about it online somewhere.

I think the current accepted procedure is for Tactical to do it, since they are responsible for weapons and defences, considering they report shield strength.

As captain, I always specify that I want Helm to manage shields. I believe it is the Captain's responsibility to identify who has that responsibility and to inform his crew as to who's responsible.

On my ship weapons raises shields and helm lowers them. Keeps mistakes from happening [wink]

I think Tactical should do it.
BUT...
I actually like the idea of the Captain ordering red alert and then the shields are raised... Puts the responsibility on the Captain rather than Tactical, which is how it should be if you ask me. Also I like the idea of using the game mechanics by pressing the Red Alert Button. It's there we should use it.

Poor red alert button. No one ever presses it any more [wink] .

Agreed!!!  There needs to be something more to RED ALERT!

There's no reason the RP fleets couldn't include that in their SOP.

Captain: "Red alert"
Comms: hit "Red Alert" button
Tac: load corps - if they aren't already
Tac: raise shields when helm drops out of warp
Eng: Use "red alert" preset

The "Red Alert" noise can serve to reminder different officers to ensure they've performed their "Red Alert" tasks - even if they never heard the initial order.

Use it to trigger activities at the Various stations.

New RP docs in development will put responsibility for raising the shields on the captain who will order a red alert.

Reason being is sometimes you may be playing with a new or inexperienced Tac officer. So leaving it to their discretion is not necessarily wise.

Also, like I said, I think everyone should be busy and enjoy their station to the fullest. So, since Comms officers can, they should be able to have the fun of pressing the red alert button.

Red alert is useful if you have the sound on; I play the game without sound, so it doesn't really help me except by listening to the person commanding.

Personally, I think it's stupid for the helm to raise the shields, but this is because I've got enough on my mind trying to fly while half-intoxicated. [wink]

(I don't really fly while intoxicated.)
