The first thing I notice as I watch the stream is the fact of the Artemis leaving the base station is totally in silhouette . A lower light in the rendering engine is needed. The observer mode places low angle shots priorities as much as the high angle shot. I personally like seeing my ship not the black holes or silhouettes of the render .

A simpler solution to changing the game space may be to just adjust the glow file.  Overlaying the glow file at 80% opacity on top of the normal diffuse file gives the impression of a general area light without needing to actually change much.

For example - the current Glow file:

A potential new one:

It's a subtle difference, but I can verify that it renders the dim hull when in shadow.  When a surface isn't impinged by the single light source, it uses the glow file for that face instead of the diffuse file.

Unfortunately this is not a solution for the game. And now with 2.4 the luminance PNG's are affected by chroma changes. While it may help me on a Windows version (with creative tweaking) it does not handle the iOS and the android therefore it is not total solution. A lower light needs to be added to the rendering engine for a complete solution for the game.

Actually, Mark's solution is completely workable under 2.4. All you need to do is remove the red, yellow and magenta from the diffuse file before overlaying the glowfile over it, or run it through a greyscale filter.

I've actually found this easier to do with custom models, instead of cutting out the glow areas and turning the rest black.

@William - it's just as much of a solution for all platforms. Overhauling the game rendering engine would require a game update for all platforms, including android and iOS. Changing the stock glow files can help pc users now. Changing them for android and iOS users would require an update, but one that is trivially easy to do.

There may be other ways to fix it - a 15% omni fill light, changing the glow file from texture replacement to transparent overlay, and probably others I haven't thought of. Any solution that is applied to all platforms would require an update to the mobile apps.

@ryleyra - yeah, I'm still chasing down red speckles in the TNG mod lol.
