We have a lot of surprises in store at Armada, especially for the erstwhile neglected Communications Officer. Because they are surprises I won't reveal details at this time, only teasers.

At this moment it's still a bit buggy, but Thom is working on two major changes that you will love - one major change that Comms Officers want and another major change that we script writers want. There are also a number of minor improvements that I think you will love.

Aside from those, Thom is also addressing a sort of bug - actually an overlooked feature - that has annoyed mission script writers and players for years. It's minor but wonderful so I will describe it here:

Invasion Mode missions send Comms messages with a color coding. Some Comms Officers often rely on that color coding, building it into their workflow. Unfortunately the color coding was unavailable to mission script writers. This led to confusion while playing scripted missions . . . Comms officers ignored important messages because they came with the wrong color code.

For the version to be released at Armada III, Thom plans to allow mission scripts to tag messages with the appropriate color code. [smile]

Color coding sounds awesome. I'm looking forward to finding out what the other features are.

I was just about to write some more missions. People seemed to like the Comms multiple choice communications. Is that what is coming? Should I wait before scripting anything?

I would wait...  Some of us like not having to update right after the latest update.

Thanks Mike.  Currently a base's "we are under attack", a "docking complete", and a ship's "we will not accept your orders" all use the same value.  I would really like to see the "we are under attack" separated from the others, as such a distress call may be critical whereas the others are not.   I'm hoping the changes you hint at will address this.

I believe the changes are a lot bigger than that, Dave. The colors are pretty much obsolete, replaced with something that is faster and more useful, especially for Comms Officers who cannot easily distinguish colors.

Cool!  Comms always seem to feel ...  "ignored"!  {At Best!}

Mike: Wow, you are taking into account the possibility of people who can't distinguish colours! I wish more developers would do this, thanks so much!!

I personally think the part of the Communications redesign that downplays color coding is important, and the feature does exist in Artemis in the beta software I am using. Unfortunately it still has a few bugs. I urgently hope that Thom gets it working 100% in the next two weeks.

Update: I believe the bugs in the message color coding (and other coding) have been worked out. I will report more on this as I test it.

Just to post an exciting teaser:

Everyone at Armada at 4:00 Friday, April 7th will get to see their Communications Officers engaging in two-way conversations with NPC ships! This will only be possible in mission scripts and IMO it will be awesome!

That's 4:00 Friday. April 7th. You're going to love it!

(As long as my mission script doesn't crash [rolleyes])

Mike, that sounds awesome! I can't wait to get my hand on this and have a load of ideas on how to use the two way conversations (depending on exactly how they work) to interact with NPCs.

No spoilers, but this Communications upgrade is a lot more powerful than just two-way conversations with NPCs. The stoyrtelling possibilities are blowing my mind, and I have barely scratched the surface!

It's great that you are so excited about this new feature. I just hope it translates into the same kind of excitement for players who do not have mission scripting skills and are dependent on other players generating new content.
