I've got a question about fighters that I suspect has some simple answer, but I can't figure it out.
Last night we played with fighters for the first time. Since several folks wanted to goof around with them, we took a carrier and all five players selected Fighter in addition to another console. We flew ourselves over to some enemies, parked the car and put up shields, and all deployed fighters.

Except for the one player who repeatedly deployed, saw the fighter display for a second, and then was shunted back into the ship with her fighter on the refit countdown. We thought maybe it was an issue of how many fighters we could have out at a time, but she tried again once everyone else had gotten their fighters destroyed and returned to base. She still couldn't deploy without getting shunted right back to the ship.

Any ideas? Thanks!

That's very interesting - are you using touch screens?  Joysticks?  It sounds like the "launch fighter" button was immediately followed by the "dock with ship" button for some reason.  Was she using the stock game, no additional software running in the background?  OS and such?

Also, which additional console was that pilot playing? Some consoles, like Helm, use the same keybinds as fighters, and you can end up controlling both at the same time. There could have been interference with another console function which ended up being interpreted as "dock with ship", such as Helm's request dock or Comms Red Alert.

That's a good point - FIGHTER_RECOVER is mapped by default to UI_INPUT_KEY_R, which is doubled up on COMMS_RED_ALERT and HELM_REQUEST_DOCK.  FIGHTER_LAUNCH is mapped by default to UI_INPUT_RETURN, which is doubled up on RUDDER_CENTER, BUTTON_INIT_JUMP, NORMALIZE_ALL_COOLANT, and SCIENCE_SCAN_BUTTON.

Was she clicking on the launch button or hitting Return to launch?

Admittedly, I can't see how hitting Return to launch could cause the Recover to trigger, unless the controls.ini got changed somehow.

Actually, that's what I thought too, but FIGHTER_LAUNCH is actually the command to launch missiles.

There is no keybind to launch fighters. There probably should be. I was thinking 1-5 to launch that slot, and another key to launch the first one in the list.

Changing the behavior so the order of fighters doesn't change is another discussion. [biggrin]

I've been getting that same problem on fighter dedicated machines. I was also getting it at Amanda II.

Thanks for the replies. She was on a laptop running Windows 10, no other programs open at the same time. We were all using identical laptops from the public library (well, identical hardware and theoretically identical software). Her secondary console was Engineering, but I don't think she'd actually done anything there. I was sitting next to her and while I couldn't swear to it, I don't think she was clicking or pressing anything other than the launch button.

Edit: the laptops do not have touchscreens.

Well, if you get the chance to try again, have her switch laptops and/or secondary consoles. If the problem follows Engineering, that's the issue, if it follows the laptop there's the problem. If she's using a joystick trying switching between that and the keyboard.

Not much I can advise you beyond that. It may just be something you have to work around. Hopefully you'll be able to give everyone a chance to fly a fighter, even if not all at the same time.

She had successfully Fighter-ed on that laptop earlier, so I don't think that's it. We'll see if we can't find a time to see if Engineering continues to be a problem.
