Dear TSN Admirals,

As Communications and Science Officer of TSN ship [classified], it is my sad duty to inform you that our recent deep strike mission in sector [classified] has resulted in the destruction of the supply ship X11 and the suspension of our Captain and First Officer until court martials can take place.

The mission started off well. We destroyed a Torgoth base, a Kralien base and several enemy ships. We defended our supply ship from space monsters and at this stage, it appeared our Captain and First Officer were making excellent decisions. Upon rendezvousing with supply ship X11 for the third time, our Captain wanted to move the supply ship X11 closer to the enemy bases since meeting up with X11 was taking a long time. Given the terrain of sector [classified] is filled with asteroids, our Captain made the decision for our TSN ship to guide X11 through the asteroids since the sensors on X11 on weak and the Captain did not want X11 to be destroyed. Our TSN ship was also going to pick up a wreck near the asteroids on the way through.

It was at this point that the mission started to go wrong. While our TSN ship was guiding our supply ship around the asteroids, the young daughter of our Captain appeared on the bridge and demanded the attention of our Captain. Our Captain left the bridge and put our First Officer in charge, the First Officer being our Weapons Officer. The Captain’s daughter appearing was a massive shock to the bridge crew since none of us knew that the Captain’s daughter was on board the ship and it is against TSN regulations to have children on board TSN vessels, particularly when undertaking dangerous missions such as deep strike missions. Our First Officer, in shock like the rest of us, made the decision to continue with our mission and deal with the Captain and her daughter later.

As our TSN ship continued guiding X11 around the asteroids slowly, our First Officer left the bridge and gave no explanation for doing so, nor did she specify who was to take control of the bridge in her absence. While she was absent, our TSN ship and X11 approached the wreck that we intended for our TSN ship to pick up. Suddenly a piranha appeared out of the wreck.

As the Science Officer, I informed the remaining bridge members of the piranha and as Communications Officer I ordered supply ship X11 to get out of the area. Our Helm Officer turned our ship around intending to fight the piranha and our Engineering Officer ran across the bridge to the weapons control since our ship was currently not damaged at the time but we needed a Weapons Officer. Sadly, our efforts were in vain, the piranha ignored our TSN ship and destroyed supply ship X11 before the supply ship could leave the area. At this point it also probably did not help that the remaining bridge officers were of equal rank and no one knew who was in charge.

With supply ship X11 destroyed, the appearance of a civilian on board our TSN ship (a minor) and the appalling actions of our Captain and First Officer, a joint decision was made to abandon the mission and suspend the Captain and First Officer pending court martials. In light of the circumstances, the Helm Officer, Engineering Officer and myself would like to recommend giving commendations to the Captain and crew of supply ship X11. We know that normally the Captain makes this recommendation but given the circumstances we think it is appropriate we do it instead.

We will reach our nearest Terran Command Base in 5 days and will arrange the court martials for our Captain and First Officer upon reaching the Base, after consultation with the Admiral on Base.

In the meantime, could we get direction on who is meant to be in charge of our TSN Ship? We are still very confused on that point and are just hoping we do not come across trouble on our way back to Terran space.

Regards,

(Disclaimer for the mods: the tone I am about to take may come across as harsh, but does not reflect my views on the character or dignity of the person who posted this, rather how I would receive this as a fictional Admiral reading this report.)

Re: Failed Deep Strike Mission Report

I appreciate the thoroughness and candor of your mission report, as it has borne out to be consistent with the evidence we downloaded from the ship's computer, however, given the evidence you have brought to light, I regret to inform you that by bearing the dual responsibilities of Science and Communications, in the absence of both the captain and second-in-command, your position as eyes and ears of the bridge at the time of the disaster makes you the commander on duty, regardless of rank.

It pains me to write this, but as a matter of principle, the example you have set in this sector is not without its consequences.  You are hereby charged with criminal negligence for willfully transmitting the message that lead the sub-warp supply ship X-11 near an uninspected shipwreck, a well-known hazard as havens for space piranhas, and you will stand trial along with your captain and first officer.  Furthermore, and effective immediately, you are placed on administrative leave and confined to quarters for the duration of your engagement.

Given the rushed nature of your deployment, as well as your integrity in reporting the facts, I expect that even with a guilty verdict, you will be spared the maximum sentence, and after a period of retraining, you may become eligible for reassignment.  I can only hope that after much time and reflection, the grave circumstances that are now a permanent part of your record can shape you into the responsible leader that your TSN officer's uniform represents.

Dear Admiral Legasse,

Thank you for your swift response. I have confined myself to quarters and am sending this message from there. I do deeply regret that my actions led to the death of an entire ship crew and the destruction of a valuable supply ship. It is my hope as well, that with retraining, I can become a valuable officer and leader of the TSN.

Confining myself to quarters does leave our ship with some practical problems though. Our Helm Officer and our Engineering Officer, both the same rank, still do not know who is meant to be in charge. Our ship is still 4 days away from the nearest Terran Command Base and therefore the bridge officers need to know who is in charge in case of an emergency.

In addition to this, that leaves our Engineering Officer and our Helm Officer as the only two bridge trained officers on duty. While the highest ranking DAMCON Officer has been temporarily assigned to the Engineering post on the bridge, that still leaves our usual Engineering Officer and our Helm Officer to fill all the other bridge positions. Currently our usual Engineer has taken on both Science and Weapons while our Helm Officer remains only on Helm. None of the officers currently on the bridge have any experience with the communications post and while I have attempted to teach the bridge officers how to use the communications console, I regret to inform you that I have been unable to do so from my quarters. The remaining bridge officers are all male and since TSN regulations state that male officers may not enter the quarters of a female officer, I find myself unable to teach the remaining officers how to use the communications console.

It is for this reason, and this reason only Admiral Legasse, that I am still sending out the communication to you and I do stress that I am sending the communication from my quarters and I have not communicated with anyone else. The remaining bridge officers have just told me that they would appreciate instructions on what they should do from a higher ranking officer and asked me to pass this communication on.

Your guidance on these matters would be much appreciated Admiral.

Yours sincerely,

Suspended pending court martial.

(thanks for going along with this, I just wrote this as a break from university assignments. This was actually the first time a monster had appeared out of a wreck while our crew has played so we were quite surprised [this was probably because we do not usually play with monsters] however I guess this would be common knowledge taught at TSN academy if this were real. We had a good laugh about it when our captain and first officer returned to the bridge afterwards).
