Hello all! I'm trying to get DMX lights working with my Artemis setup, and I need some help

I have a system running Windows 10 as my Artemis SBS 2.2 server, an UltraDMX Micro USB dongle from DMXKing, and 4 86 count RGB LED lights that are DMX512 compatible. Using this gear and the UltraDMX configuration tool I can control all of the DMX functions on the lights, and I can transmit across 16 different channels to control each light individually at the same time. I can also set all of the lights to use the same 4 channels to have them work in perfect sync. Everything uses DMX cables and the chain ends with a proper DMX terminator.

But when I start Artemis the lights never work, so I downloaded DMX Commander (thanks russjudge for creating that) and that also did not activate the lights.

My channels are as follows:

1 - Dimmer
2 - Red
3 - Green
4 - Blue

Here is a sample of the code used for the NORMAL_CONDITION_1 event from my DMXcommands.xml file:

Quote:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

<DMX_CONTROL version="2.00">

<!-- ********************************************************************************************* -->
<event type="NORMAL_CONDITION_1" continuous="yes">

<!-- steady soft white light -->
<timeblock mseconds="1000">
<setvalue index="0" value="100" change="0"/>
<!-- set brigthness -->
<setvalue index="1" value="100" change="0"/>
<!-- red value of first light box -->
<setvalue index="2" value="100" change="0"/>
<!-- green value of first light box -->
<setvalue index="3" value="100" change="0"/>
<!-- blue value of first light box -->
</timeblock>
</event>

Running all 4 channels at value 100 through software other than Artemis results in the steady soft white light. Seems like I have the DMX part of the setup working correctly, but I don't want to assume that this is an Artemis problem either.

Any ideas as to what is wrong with my setup? Thanks!

Short answer is that it's your dongle - Artemis is set up to use Enttec DMX Open compatible dongles while the one you've got is Enttec USB Pro compatible.

The unofficial Artemis wiki has several compatible dongles that folks have tried: http://artemiswiki.pbworks.com/w/page/68388288/USB-DMX%20Converters

On the plus side, I was able to make a dongle pretty cheaply using this part:

Here is the thread where I put it all together

MarkBell - That's unfortunate. There are a great deal of pro compatible hardware solutions out there that would be nice to use with Artemis. I ordered the Enttec Open DMX USB and a 5 pin to 3 pin adapter. Once I have everything working I'll post a follow-up here and share a video as well. I have another project that I can use the existing dongle with.

notsabbat - I saw your posts on building your own, and considered doing that as well. What you did looks great, and I'm sure that I could follow your instructions to build my own version. Great work on you part!

In the end I decided that it wasn't the right choice for what I am trying to accomplish. I'm building a completely portable bridge with 5 touch screen stations for a side business that I am starting. Right now I have plenty of capital that I've saved working my full time job, but what I don't have is the time. I'd rather drop some cash (within reason) on the working solutions that are already out there for some of the challenges that I'm facing with this project (like lighting effects), and reserve my time for the challenges where solutions can't be purchased (like the custom portable bridge stations that I am building).

Thanks all!

A completely understandable position. I'm on a shoe string budget, so I spend an inordinate amount of time researching cheap options [tongue]
Please post pictures of your progress. I love seeing projects.
If you feel I can be of any help, please feel free to ask.

Yesterday my Enttec Open DMX USB controller and 5 pin to 3 pin adapter arrived. I did a quick test with two of my spotlights using DMX Commander, and everything worked as expected. Hopefully I will have some time soon to configure different effects for all of my DMX lighting gear. I'll create a video once I have time and post it here.

Thanks everyone for the help!

If you still have your Enttec DMX Pro compatible dongle, I'm still looking for someone to test it with Artemis DMX Tools which includes untested support for the Enttec DMX Pro.

Dave Thaler - Yes, I was going to keep the DMX Pro dongle for other projects anyhow. I am happy to test the Artemis DMX Tools with both dongles and to provide feedback to you.

Right now I'm working out the kinks for my lighting effects (what happens, which lights go off, etc.). I hope to have that completed soon. Plus I now have all five of my 23" touchscreens with VESA mounted  PCs on the back and I'm working on a custom Windows 10 image for them that has Artemis pre-installed. If all goes well I will soon have a video uploaded of my setup with the lights.
