Hi all - I'm starting a new topic to gauge interest on this. A few people now have offered to host a panel on DIY DMX, so I propose that we all co-host a panel. We can each present our rigs, the advantages and disadvantages and answer questions.

After the panel, I'd like to offer a hands on workshop. It'd be $50 for the parts, and I/we would help up to 15 people get started with DMX hardware. (My goal is to not have any soldering required.) They can then take their new rig with them and start expanding!

If you'd be interested in co-hosting the panel and/or helping with the workshop, please post here! If you're interested in attending such a panel or workshop, please post here!

The workshop will be free if you either have your own parts or just want to watch.

With the call for proposed panels coming in the near-ish future, I'd like to re-request that anyone interested in participating/co-hosting please get in contact with me!  No need to have duplicate competing panel proposals [smile]

I'd be interested in  helping out! I don't have a particularly shiny DMX rig, but I have a couple of RGB par cans and I understand the protocol fairly well. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron (computer engineer here!), so the workshop sounds pretty appealing.

That'd be great!  My rig is about as far from shiny as it can get, but it works [tongue]  My idea for the panel was to have a few folks present what rigs they had (PAR cans, complete homebrew, hybrid, whatever) and talk a bit about the advantages and disadvantages of any particular setup.  I personally would like to hear about your experiences getting your particular rig working and that kind of thing.

And for the workshop, double great!  I'm hoping to avoid too much soldering in the workshop, mostly to keep it from turning into a Soldering 101 class, but having another E on hand will be very helpful - EE here [smile]

Mark - I'm really interested in participating in your presentation if you're looking for more people. I've had a lot of luck with my setup so far, and would love to share the experience. My setup isn't portable, but I could at least bring photos and video of it, and maybe show some of the tools and components I used.

I've actually got another project in the works right now...I'm seriously considering building an entire bridge that's portable for the convention. If I can get that going, I'll do my best to document it and maybe during the workshop we could take apart the stations so the "guts" can be seen by the attendees.

As a refresher, here's my latest video:

I remember - I'm a huge sucker for LCARS paneling [biggrin] Love to have you on board!  Whatever you can bring or demo would be great.  Everyone's setup is going to be different, and having hands on stuff is always great.

Bump for visibility.  If you'd like to come to a workshop, please let us know!  The presentation will be first, and we'll have a few different rigs to explore and discuss.  After the presentation will be a hands on workshop - learn how to make some basic DIY DMX gear, and take home your first lights!

Mark - Since I'm not sure I'll really want to dismantle one of my stations that I'll be bringing, if this panel is still going to happen, would it make sense just to offer to attendees the option to come to the bridge setup and see the "guts" of the stations and maybe do a short presentation on how they were built? I could either do that at the bridge location itself, or in a separate room, depending on how things will be set up. I've been taking pictures of the stations that I could put into a slideshow or something, and then they can see the finished product in person.

As someone that has intrest in this panel, a tour and description of how everthing is set up would be good for me.

That'd be great! If you could pull together ~15 minute presentation, that'd be fantastic. We'll be in a separate room for the panel, so if you could bring one in that'd be super keen. If not, then maybe a tour to the setup during the DIY workshop instead?

I know I, for one, would be very much interested in this.  I'm kinda interested in DMX in general, and a workshop like this would be fantastic.

I would love to learn more about DMX and interfacing it to Artemis.

OK, Armada is only a few weeks away (!!!!!), so I just want to double check numbers. I haven't heard a lot of interest in the workshop. A few, which is great, and I'll still run in for anyone who's interested, but I'm not hearing a full crew, as it were.

The panel should be pretty interesting - I think we'll have a few cool looks at different ways to set up your rig.

I'm still interested.  And I would like to finally meet you and say thanks for helping me get mine started!  How long do you think your panel will be?
