I never thought to look in Off Topic for details on how to modify ship files, but I just found this:

It's an excellent post from MarkBell about the different elements of the game that can be modified, many of which are important for making custom ships to go with your custom missions.  So in case other scripters are looking for this stuff I thought I'd cross-post it.  Thanks, Mark!

No problem!  Basically all the info on modifying the game itself (rather than writing scripts) are in the Off Topic section.  It's an organizational thing, mostly, but it's mentioned in the rules post pinned in each section 😉

Yeah, there should probably be two categories for "Mods that are unsupported by the developer, but aren't necessarily copyright violation", and "Mods that can't be associated with Artemis at all, because Thom will get sued". But "Off Topic" covers both. 😃

Missions and DMX Setups, since they ARE supported, have their own forums. Technically, some missions require you to mod your vesselData.xml, but I'm not sure where the line is. There is a lot you can do without modding, for instance, a generic mesh can be added to the game without having to mod it.

TLDR: Modding is considered off topic, since it's unsupported by Thom. You mod Artemis at your own risk.

From the beginning I have wished that a mission folder could include an extra vesseldata.xml file that would allow a script to use one or more customized ships without modding the whole game. Thom explained that this was not feasible because the game was structured so that all the vessels are loaded when the game first launches.

Perhaps in Artemis 3.0 this will be different. That would make some kinds of scripting and modding a lot easier.
