Wouldst it be possible to make it so Fighters could select a short handle {a call-sign} for themselves {while on-board the mother-ship}??  I think it would add a nice level of personalization to the game.  {And can't wait to hear "That's a nugatory, Iceman." in the sound track somewhere....}

I think getting a handle as a fighter would be cool, even if it was assigned instead of chosen.

We talked a little about this on the pirate fighter wing at Armada. We were trying to claim fighter numbers so we could see our statistics at the end of the game and have them mean something - but it was near impossible to get the same fighter twice, let alone every time you launched. It would be nice if we could have a handle, then get our stats according to that handle.

That suggestion has been made before. Since fighters do not see any ID information on their screens, even on friendly or enemy ships (their home ship displays "HOME" but that's it) it might be a good feature to add along with ship identifiers. The home ship, however, currently always sees the fighter's identification number. ("TSN 136" or the like)

I like the idea of having the Fighter Bay screen itself have the ability to change the fighter's name. Even better, I think I would prefer to let each pilot set HIS OWN name. Thus for instance "Iceman" could set that name for himself, and whatever fighter he actually chose to take out would display "Iceman" instead of "TSN whatever".

Finally, I'll add there is nothing preventing you from giving yourself whatever call sign you want and the others pilots and crew using that to refer to you. Some thinking will be required to match the call sign to the fighter ID for Science and/or Comms, but it can be done. Choosing the same fighter every time you go out can make that easier.

Are you sure stats are recorded according to individual fighter and not pilot? It doesn't seem to make sense for it to be programmed that way.

Also Arrew made a good suggestion, which is for each pilot to be assigned a position in the launch sequence, and to announce which fighter they have chosen as they launch. So, "TSN 001 Away!" "TSN 002 Away" "TSN 003 Away!" and so on. The second and third pilots cannot launch until the first has launched.

Of course, some flexibility will be needed during combat when pilots are launching for resupply of missiles and launching again. But it's probably a waste of effort to have everybody scrambling to grab a fighter and launch first.

Stats are displayed according to the fighter number. I'm assuming it's programmed that way because stats are collected by actual vessel, not console/screen.

We did attempt to have a designated launch order when running the carrier at Armada - we found the lag was just significant enough to disrupt this, and it took us at least 10 seconds to launch all fighters. We eventually gave up trying to coordinate launch order and just launched all together and said damn the statistics.

Yes, the idea of fighter pilot handles has been suggested before. I think Thom likes the idea and we can expect to see it in a future release.
