In the recent podcast ship to ship voice chat was mentioned. And Thom explained why not.

May I suggest Ship to Ship Text Chat.

The programming is already within the game. The GM can post messages to the comms stations. Why not allow the Comms station to do the same thing... only it registers as being said by the ship's name.

In this way ships can communicate with each other and all communications would go through the Comms officer... Which I think would feel cool and authentic.

"Comms message the Liberator and ask if they require assistance." [wink]

"Captain message from the Liberator as follows: Give us Freedom or give us Death!"
But serriously I think every one would love to see this feature and just from experiance some people can type fast.

Would adore this option, even if there were major restrictions to text link or how often it could be sent. I.e. Only with Shields down and at less than warp 1 unless you want them to get a scrambled message.

Also what podcast was this you mentioned earlier?

He is talking about the band geek podcast that was posted in another thread. They interviewed Thom [smile]

I would definitely like to see Text Chat among Comms, and as a way for Comms to answer the GM during missions.

Was fun listening too. A bunch of guys, and gals, having fun and talking about Artemis. Kind of reminds me of listing to the Penny Arcade D&D podcast. And they interview the games creator.

Would recommend it.

Okay that podcast was pretty awesome. I can completely understand his desire to not put in voice comms with that argument. Though texts and a scroll function or even a way to output the message log would be super.

Well the GM consol can already do it so it's (The Prgoramming) in the game already.

Just let the Comm Consol send messages to Comms too.

I don't know programming at all but it seems that all the pieces are there already.

You can do targeted voice chat between ships easily enough with whisper lists on Teamspeak, but having the text popup between ships, and text relayed from comms to their ship's stations could be quite handy. I've found that relaying messages between ships via the comms officers adds a level of realism to it, but the comms officer can easily get overwhelmed as well, especially when there's a lot of chatter going on.

Text chat has the added advantage that the communication is automatically recorded and can be reviewed if needed. At least, as long as it follows the format laid out by the Comms console.

One thing that has long plagued me as a comms guy is loosing the comms buffer. How many times you disconnect and reconnect everythings gone...even if it was just to change out a console selection. I doubt that'll change but at least a buffer log file while the game was running properly would allow folks to offset that issue and be a interesting piece to add into mission reports.

I absolutely think that ship to ship text chat would be great especially for RP so that the Comms officer can compose messages to NPCs and the GM can respond as the NPC dynamically, thus increasing the RP possibilities and immersion in general.

I have been trying to find a way of doing this myself for the time being. on that note does anyone know of any tools that help with the unpacking and editing of the DLLs?
