Clarification: When I said "troops" I meant LARP troops like Gryphon mentioned. Thom has no plans for in-game space marines at this time, but if a squad of players with Nerf or Laser Tag guns might be delivered to a location for a bug hunt.

Last night Doug Reichard (who many of you met at Armada) put the new fighters through their paces. Here is a video of his exploits that he assembled:

Here is my photo of a fighter preparing to dock with a TSN Light Cruiser.

In Clavestone's video above you can clearly see that Mark Bell is flying an Artemis fighter with his Steel Battalion cockpit rig. It looked great!

Here is another video of Doug Reichard of the "Blackjacks" fighter squadron taking on a Torgoth.

On the right side of the screen you can see the fighter's "health bar" which goes down when a drone hits early in the video. The fighter has a rapid fire beam weapon with a narrow arc directly forward. It fires when a target is locked and the trigger is pulled. It can also carry three homing torpedoes per sortie which can be fired at the same locked target.

Docking with a capital ship replenishes the health and the torpedo load but it takes a few minutes. While docked bored figher pilots are invited to play a mini game of Blackjack.

NB - 3 axis joysticks are the key for analog control. They're not required, you can comment out the analog roll control in the controls.ini file, but FYI [smile]

How will fighters affect the 12" x 12" proposed allotment for bridges come Armada? Fitting in more people will be a challenge.

The 12x12" bridge space was the product of a forum discussion, not a ruling about space allotment for Armada. If the attendance is similar to last year and the space similar, it won't be an issue. Aptimal placement in regards to the other crew may be a thing that has a learning curve, but there will likely be space for it.

Course I do wonder if fighters can dock with any ship, or just the one they are asigned to? Maybe we will end up with a fighter pilot section that keeps in touch with their parent ship via teamspeak [biggrin]

The Armada committee is aware that the introduction of fighters will change the ballroom layout significantly. I don't know what the plan will be, but I know they are concerned.

Would it be possible to have a centralized "fighter pit" where all the pilots can play and just have them assigned to ships and stay in contact via headset with their capital ship?

A central fighter pit is a good idea.

My diagonal 12x12 layout has been modded to incorporate a single-seat fighter cockpit in the left corner by replacing the captain's chair with a jump seat now located in the back corner. Since none of us like to sit when playing captain anyway, this should work well enough. I could probably squeeze another fighter cockpit into the right corner by moving Engineering to a stand-up/jump seat console in the back corner and build in a captain's fold-out jump seat midway along one of the back walls. Good thing I planned this out as a modular build; my daughter would never forgive me if I didn't build in a fighter for her, now that I can....
