Hey everyone, first post- I’ve had Artemis for years, only recently upgrading to v2 when playing with a new crew. Everything’s great, we’re having a fantastic time, but there’s one minor quality of life update I’d like to make for them if at all possible.

Two of my crew are RG colour blind, and unfortunately a lot of the colours used in the UI fall exactly within the spectrums they can’t see, leaving things unpleasant & grey.

What I’d like to do is edit some of the files so that things like the warp & impulse engine sliders are different colours, just to make things easier.

Can anyone tell me which files I should be editing? I know that a lot of them are just replaceable PNGs, but what should I change to mess with things like sliders? Has anyone ever made something like this before?

Thanks for the post. This is an important topic for GUI design.

I have not made changes to these files myself, but I do know that it is possible to change all of the GUI pieces. Others have modded them completely, for example Mark's Star Trek Mod:

Trying out the mod might be a good place to start. If I recall, several GUI parts have been made higher contrast.

Thanks for the suggestions!

So far, I’ve looked through the files and can only find the empty gauges- It’s the colours that are used to fill them that are the issue. I haven’t had a chance to install the mod yet to see if it’s changed there, but I will tonight!

I've not had time to research deeply, but it might be possible to apply a color-blindness adjustment to the entire game via a 3rd party tweak utility like nVidia Freestyle or Reshade.

In the Eastern Front mod, I changed the controls color schemes to more match the "battle worn" red/yellows of our "WWII Russian Eastern Front color scheme". You have to modify quite a few .png files, but if only at client level, you should be able to change it to whatever you need.

We experimented in the TSN with changing colours for the GUI as part of a mod and one member mentioned struggling with being colour blind and made a request for changes. Another came up with a GUI that suited them. I'll see if I can get hold of the files/ get them to post here.

Unfortunately, this is the exact opposite type of colour blindness that my crewman has- It displays all the colours that he can't see!

HOWEVER! Now that I have this as a guide for which files I need to change, it should be MUCH easier to do it myself!

He has near-full RG colourblindness, but blues show up perfectly. I’m going to try to see if I can just mess with some hues with a slider & such- Shouldn’t be too hard.
