Hey, is there any way to give people a client only version of Artemis? To remove some critical file that is required to run the server, or tell it not to draw the server button? And would it reappear or work again if they upgraded Artemis from say 2.5.101 to 2.6?

Nope - server and client Artemis installs are 100% identical. The client/server delineation is done inside the main .exe.

Forum member Commodore Erickson has been asking Thom to re-create the power to force a station to be a certain client ship/console upon boot up. It would be done using a configuration file. I think a number of players desire this feature and it will probably be included in an upcoming release of Artemis. This might not be exactly what you want, but you may be able to get it to work for your purpose.

Are you asking about locking it to a specific client like Mike is suggesting?  or about a version that could be distributed to people so that they can't run it in server mode later?

Both would be nice, but a way to distribute a version that won't allow friends to run it as a server with their friends later is what I'm asking. Locking Artemis into a specific client might be dangerous given the tendency it can have to crash... And maybe Thom could release a .exe that does not have the server. I feel like that might be a very useful feature. Especially if I'm installing it on 6-12 computers for a party. [wink]

The impression I get from Thom is that he'd rather just focus on the game, and trust that people won't abuse his system.  If a friend really likes the game and wants to play it with other friends, just make sure they know where to get the game from.

Alternately, you can install the game to USB drives and run the game from the drive itself, without copying it to anyone's computer.
