want a challenge?  test your crews mettle?    play as captain, but totally blind.   turn around.   don't look at your monitors or screens. close your eyes if you must!  talk to your crew and work it all out verbally.   want a captains map?  hope you have a pencil and paper handy!

tried this tonight and I'm proud to say my crews stepped up to the added difficulty quite nicely.  wins both games!

good times!

DAMN You stole my idea!!!!!!! :F

I was speaking to Corwin about this yesterday funnily enough, and I Said "wouldn't it be so fun to have a captain that goes off the word of his crew, having no access to Artemis what so ever and only having information his crew provide him/her"

Reviving this because I just found it.

My group never uses captains map, it just feels like cheating. Our captains sit in "the chair" in the middle of the room, with the crew surrounding them and the main screen in front (we got a nice 50" screen for the occasion). So it's not completely blind, but as captain I can only see what I call to the main screen. I have no buttons, no computer of my own, sometimes I can't even see what we're fighting unless I call for forward visual.

Definitely makes for a much more real experience. Going even further, we have our own RP system for ranks and promotions and such, and the requirements for advancement beyond captain start involving commanding multiple ships without being on them. For this we do allow a captain's map simply because we wouldn't have anything else otherwise, though I may try without one for an extra challenge next time I get to command multiple ships. But it's huge fun, relying on the comms officers to relay orders and info between captains and admiralty.

Still can't believe I haven't tried this yet... Now that you're back, Phil, I may need to try it with you, though it will likely end in disaster! Good thing I could record it, though there wouldnt be much to look at with a blank screen...

Ditto.  With the ability to have mulitple science stations, I've never understood the need for a captains map - or long range senser map that is built into some (all?) stations.

Captain's map is useful since when clicking on stuff, you won't disrupt the science officer's ship selection and scanning. This can be great for a captain trying to check the status of an allied vessel or station while in the heat of combat somewhere else to see if they have time to finish up or not in that first location before the ally falls.

Yup, I don't use a captain's map. It detracts too much from the other crew members' involvement.

Reading this, it seems like a nice idea, kinda strikes me as a more BSG style of bridge, although they did have the Dradis screens for combat. One thing I would be tempted to do is to invest in some acetate sheets and print off a grid, then use the different acetates for different layers of the region, so you can change out what information you had visible to you as the captain.

Another fun thing would be to compare your map with the actual map at the end to see how accurate you got it!

You could always try "Camera view only". In other words, not showing LRS, TAC, or INFO on main screen. Relying on ENG, SCI, and Helm to get you that info. In any of the Star Treks they had front screen and back (I don't remember any "Side view" or "Tactical display" shown on main").

In BSG and Star Wars they had the tactical grid seperate (Draidis, on the Yavin IV base and Hoth). There is a good RP position "Tactical Officer". Maybe give the TO 3 minutes (game paused) to quickly draw the nebula, stations, and minefields on the map. Then have to get enemy movements from SCI. Maybe even need 2 SCI officers one for Ship scanning and the other for TO support.

Ever played Space Alert the board game?

Now there's some inspiration for annoying things popping up. Like "Communications down" followed by a buzz for 5-30 sec at random. That could be a real challenge is say one simulate not being in the same room..

Plenty more in that game [smile]
