OK, gotta ask: has anyone ever beat Battle of Elihu 12 on Artemis 2.7.1?

Note the shipping version of the script needs adjustment to ensure the AI of friendlies accepts orders, but once that was done, I am still amazed at just how fierce and frantic this mission gets in short order!

Was planning to use this mission on some of our more advanced Artemis fans at Dragon Con, but WOW it's a doozy.

Hi Lawson Thompson. I think our test crew beat The Battle of Elihu 12 before it was released at Artemis Armada I, but they had played it throughout its development. Since then I don't know if anyone has ever beaten The Battle of Elihu 12 but the canonical crew came close. Their main mistake was in treating the Comms position as if it were a regular mission. The players have a powerful Torgoth ally that needs repair parts from a freighter. Assuming the mission is working correctly, Comms should get messages about this. This makes the mission even more frantic because while everything else is going on Comms and Science must work together to arrange a safe rendezvous on a perilous battlefield.

My crew played it at Arnada I. It was tough.  We havent gone back to test theory, but from what I understand fron the playtesters, its a lot easier if you get the Torgoth repaired. Otherwise its a very uphill battle. My crew could handle lvl 11 with a single ship pretty easily back then (lvl11 was admittedly easier before the rescale) and without the Torgoth ally we lost it pretty handily (though we were able to take out all but a few of the carriers, I believe).
If you make it clear beforehand that the torgoth ship needs to be repaired or else it will be much more difficult, Its probably going to be ok for an experienced crew to get a good challenge out of it without it being super hard.

So to clarify, the one Torgoth needing repairs frees up the freighter to provide VERY VALUABLE goodies to the Artemis, and not because that one lone Torgoth is the key to winning, correct?

There is no single key to winning. As I recall the freighter has two jobs - repairing the Torgoth (which increases the firepower that your Comms Officer can wield for you) and thereafter supplying goodies for Artemis. I suppose the freighter is one key to victory, but I didn't intend it to be the only key to victory. The mission was supposed to force the entire bridge crew to be at the top of their game 100% of the time. If anyone makes a mistake you will all lose. Yes, the Comms and Science Officers must be perfect in directing that freighter to repair the Torgoth, bring you supplies, and not die in the process. But Helm, Weapons, and Engineering must also give perfect performances. They are all keys to winning The Battle of Elihu 12.

My experience is that Comms Officers are not accustomed to such high stakes vested in their performance.

If you use an old enough version of Artemis you don't need to fix anything. But for recent versions, when each friendly ship spawns you need to add the AI block to "follow comms orders" to its brain stack. Friendly ships used to get this by default, but for whatever reason that was removed somewhere around Artemis 2.3 and never put back.

I can't believe I overlooked this bug when I updated the stock missions. I'll have to go back and fix that.

When I first tried this mission, I assumed none of the allied ships were accepting commands until after the repairs to the Behemoth were complete. Nope!

Sure don't recommend taking this mission on without the assistance of the allies, that's for sure. Didn't end well.
