So I have been working on some very short back stories for the 6 stations in the RPG I am making.
What do you think?

Engineer

A committed family man Alan Garner’s love of gadgets and tinkering is second place to the love of his wife and twin little girls. Though how close a second place he will not say. Recently posted to the Ardent he hasn't been aboard for long. But his jovial antics have already earned him a reputation as the ship's comedian and prankster.

Comms

Jennifer Davro literally talked herself off of one of the Gorin Slum worlds. As soon as she was able to she enlisted with the Terran Stellar Navy as a way of escaping a life of petty crime. Although she has distanced herself from her Orion Syndicate contacts, and even her brother who is still a member, she has found the skills that she was taught can be put to good use. Desperate to prove, mostly to herself, that she can be a positive force in the galaxy she is a firm believer in the altruistic principles of the USFP.

Navigator

While she cares for and is protective of her crewmates, that she considers her family, Amelia Lockheart didn’t joined the Terran Stellar Navy for any ideological reason. It was the promise of flying some of the biggest and fastest ships in the galaxy that sold her on the idea. Being five time winner of the Europa Run she is an avid pilot and champion racer.

Science

A genius that completed his first master’s degree at the age of thirteen Dr William Maxwell is one of the USFP’s greatest minds. Feeling that he has learnt all he can from the Universities of Earth, and bored with the tedious life of an academic, he craves the excitement of fieldwork and the opportunity to be the first to encounter the strange and unknown that might exist at the edge of explored space.

Tactical

Hailing from a long line of military officers dating back to Earth’s Second World War Paul Leavie followed in the family tradition and enlisted for military service. Fiercely independent he loves to test himself, be it against an enemy or against a challenge like climbing Olympus Mons on Mars. Never happier than when he has a phaser in his hand and a job that needs doing he has no desire for promotion or anything that might take him out of the field.

Commander

Christopher Hail was born on Earth but grew up on one of the Alpha Ceti Space Station Colonies. His father was killed in action ramming his own badly damaged ship into an attacking Kralien Dreadnaught saving the Station, and the young Christopher. Following in his father’s footsteps he enlisted in the Terran Stellar Navy as soon as he was old enough. He is a career officer and is working towards the big chair and a ship of his own.

u have a commander in stead of the captain? if u are not taking the full bridge crew if I was captain picking ppl id keep comms on board and send a red shirt unless u always need a dedicated translator and have no universal translator, and to be honest how often would a captain send the guy that keeps his ship in the air where he might get killed?

I would assume that all ships are minimally crewed and there were no extras on board maybe to the point that the ships lands to eliminate the whole 'some one needs to stay behind while the ships in orbit'. and we can then assume the dam con are repair droids that's why they will fix a hall before fixing the engines or weapons with out being told(and ds can easily stock racks of them and not care u keep losing crew member by the dozen!).

It's supposed to be an Awayteam, and I feel the Captain should stay on the bridge. Also someone needs to DM the game so the Captain is the choice I had in mind. But the Captain can easily play as the Commander. That's why I put him in there

I kind of hoped that people could be who they wanted to be so if you wanted two security you could do that. But here is the thing. Some challenges will require a certain skill. For example if you need to repair  something or reconfigure an alien technological system you're going to need someone with Engineering skill.

Kind of using the TNG as a precedent where the First Officer, Chief Engineer, Security, Counciler and well Spock (Yeah i know thats TOS) would go on missions. Not all missions will be combat though. Could be diplomatic. The Navigator has some skills that could be useful, particularly those that might involve piloting anything. And since the Navigator is based on a Ranger, has pretty beef DPS. Perhaps too good really. I alays thought Rangers were overpowered.

Ships in the game are fully staffed, in Star Trek canon kind of way. So repair teams are living breathing engineers. That's why they die, and not get broken if they were droids. But then it's a game. The idea is you can play it how you want. The extra RPG back story bits are just fluff. The game mechanics let you play what you want.

Perhaps its best to consider that this is an Away team and not the Bridge Crew per say.

Someone has to be piloting and running the ship. I don't think that any Captain would send his only engineer or navigator off ship, so they would have to be different people.
