Update: May 6, 2018. Did the "Early Release software" thing and ran the mission in its current state (Chapters 1 and 2 complete) with a full crew and took lots of recommendations and advice.

The general consensus was Chapter 1 and 2 were quite useful, guiding players via popup messages and the like to show how various concepts worked. However, my attempt to be clever and reduce scan range and use stealth features + nebula-obscuring side effects caused a big boring blob of "where is the enemy" and "what do we do next?"

So, off to the editor we go!

On the plus side: I hadn't actually written the latter half of the mission script yet, and will just save that for another separate encounter.

Update for May 29, 2018: Ready for voice-over!

I'm ready to start splicing in voice-overs to the script, and we have a few volunteers already here at the forums who have offered to provide voice-overs; I'll be sending DMs and pointing them to these instructions.

The mission script is essentially complete and contains numbered sections where narration points are marked. The script is playable now, only instead of audio it just sends line numbers to the Communications station as messages, indicating what lines are going to be played at that point in the script.

In fact, it is possible to "live read" the lines if the narrators just watch the Comms messages and read the lines matching the messages.

I'd like the narrators to read through the entire script, performing ALL character lines "in character" and saving the audio files with names matching the lines. If you have more than one "voice" feel free to read each character's lines in a different voice, avoiding accents. Straight read-through in one voice is fine too.

I would GREATLY prefer to hear your own real voice in character, avoiding any "cartoony" characterizations. Clarity of enunciation is quite important.

If you have a "natural" accent because English is your second language, or you hail from "over the pond" that's fine!

To summarize:
  • Do a straight read-through in character.
  • When in doubt, slow down.
  • Pause between sentences, take a breath, hold it for a second, and continue. This provides a way for me to cut out breath noise. I can pretty easily remove silence if you pause "too long"--adding silence if you read too fast is really hard!
  • Save each set of lines as an MP3 or WAV file named to match the numbered section. For example, in section "1150 Diagnostic starts" there are 4 lines spoken, each from a different character. Read all 4 lines in-character, and save the audio as 1150.mp3. If you needed 3 takes to get through the lines, that's fine--just do it again all in the same file. I may take different lines from different takes in editing.
  • Share the finished audio clips via whatever means you have. I can provide a writable Google Drive or OneDrive folder as necessary.

I will be adding extra audio effects (roger/hail beeps, a bit of static/grunge, fake stereo wide field, background effects) and mixing the various narrator takes into finished WAV files.

Review the story line and narration at Artemis Escape-Room style experience (Google Doc)

So far as the XML script itself: additional fixes still pending won't affect the narration, so I'm releasing a working version as-is. It needs a couple more combat balance passes, and final won/loss condition handling.

The current version of the XML script is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1myn5WoLaGb2R_xfqxtfvMKPyhH4tId5A/view?usp=sharing

If you want to provide voiceovers, and haven't previously mentioned doing so, feel free to take a crack at it and share your recordings either here or via DM. Thanks!

And #ThreadKick!

So, from our original list of interested parties, I have recordings from 2--and they've set the bar quite high, so y'all better bring your A-game! (Nice work Mandash & Co!).

In particular, I'm looking for some men's voices now. Check the instructions in the previous post, and give it a shot! If I can get your recordings within 48 hours, we can go live this FRIDAY at a convention for a real-world test.

What is the best way to get the files over to you?

Best solution I've found if you don't have OneDrive or Google Drive space: https://send.firefox.com will accept uploads up to 1GB  and returns a temporary URL you can PM to me. That should do it!

I hope you were able to get things together to use it for the convention. I can't wait to hear how things turned out.

Not a problem--I missed the self-imposed "have it done by this week's con" deadline myself and didn't get the final audio spliced in yet.

However, this bit of delay means I now have not just 1, but 2 additional voiceovers submitted!

I'll be asking my wife (who has been both director and actor on both sides of the "who gets what role" situation) to help out with the final voiceover selections, and then work out the final scripting bits to ensure the right thing plays at the right time, for the right length of time.

Sorry, I'm not on here very often! When are you shooting for having these audio clips? I'm busy this week marketing my dating workshop on 6/26, and traveling this weekend.

Though I could try bringing a small lav mic I have, and recording on my phone...

I'm assembling a rough cut this week. The ultimate deadline for official final release is mid-August--where I hope to use it at Dragon Con 2018!

I suspect there will be multiple releases as things get tweaked, so I'll certainly entertain "late" entries over the next few weeks.

Thanks!

Any chance there might be a rough cut done? I'm doing a session on July 4 at a local game shop and would love to test it out.

Running an event at the high school tonight at an all nighter. I'll give an AAR sometime on Sunday maybe. I don't anticipate being coherent anytime tomorrow. 😉
I'll be running my lighting rig too, and promise I'll actually grab some video this time.
