I've actually crafted a lengthy email response to another forum visitor addressing this exact thing! I'll post it another thread and link here.

And there's the link!

I dug into this and found that the app already has apparently had this feature for some time.  By default, it autosaves every 5 minutes, keeping the last 10 snapshots.  The 5 minutes and 10 snapshots are configurable as "Autosave interval" and "Autosave files count", respectively, under Tools->Settings.

The help text for the interval setting explains: "Defines interval (in minutes) between autosaves.  Autosave saves current mission state to a file in program folder (%APPDATA%\ArtemisMissionEditor\).  You can manually load mission file from that folder if you need, like a program crashes or computer reboots unexpectedly. 0 means autosave is disabled."

AUGH! I feel so foolish! And my appdata folder truly does contain the last 50 minutes of editing work. Thanks for that!

Well, I had no idea it had that capability either!  However, I have now some additional good news for you...

Artemis Mission Editor v2.7.10 is now released.  Changes include:
  • Added ability to easily find recent files, from File menu
  • Added ability to easily find recent autosaved versions, from File menu
  • When an autosaved version is newer than the most recent file, starting the editor will now ask you if you want to resume from where it saved.
  • Fixed bug where the potential problems check would incorrectly complain about missing a set_variable command when using if_client_key
  • Fixed bug where autosaving would happen when nothing was actually changed
This should hopefully make it so the feature is automatically discoverable and more usable now.

Try this out and let me know if you like it or have additional suggestions.
