I have what seems to be "random" crashes with my Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

It almost always allows me to start the game but will crash randomly while in play.

My Machine:
- Windows 10 version 1703 build 15063.540 (64-bit)
- Microsoft Surface Pro 4
- Intel Core i7-6650U 2.20 GHz
- 8 GB RAM

When I check Event viewer this is what I get:

Faulting application name: Artemis.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5908b3ed
Faulting module name: DINPUT.DLL, version: 10.0.15063.0, time stamp: 0xeaab4c62
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00015e1f
Faulting process id: 0x2bc0
Faulting application start time: 0x01d3210ab6906f07
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis\Artemis.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DINPUT.DLL
Report Id: d3b30213-6e35-4b45-b502-8bd8407ce15d
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I have another windows 10 machine and it works fine on it. It seems to be something related to this machine. I even restored back to factory settings and only installed basic applications and then Artemis on the machine. It is still having an issue.

Any help or input is greatly appreciated.

You mentioned in another thread that you didn't have any secondary language inputs (the IME concern that was mentioned), but can you be a little more specific?

Do the crashes happen when it's connected to another machine as a client?  Or has it only been as a server?

Does it happen when you're flying through space or is it usually triggered when you start getting close to a group of enemies?

Are you running it as windowed, full screen windowed, or full screen?

Do you have any peripherals plugged in?

There have been some other people who've experienced issues with Surfaces and/or Pro's, so hopefully someone can chime in with ideas.

Thank you for your reply. I will definitely include more information and try to detail what I have tried so far:

There was mention, in this forum post here, that one person had issue with it crashing while changing focus from the game window. It seemed they ran a "stack trace" (which i am unfamiliar with) and discovered that it was dealing with other language IME (Input Method Editors). Their "workaround" was to just uninstall and only install the 2.4 version.

I have tried this workaround and it did not work. I also checked to see if I had a different language IME listed in the list and there was only the English version.

My issue & OS Troubleshooting:
Mine seems to be pointing to a different .dll file than the issue of the previous forum post (this is why I created a separate post). It has something to do with the dinput.dll file. I am not 100% sure what this file does but part of my troubleshooting involved removing the .dll from the system32 folder (it still ran for quite a while without it there), replacing the .dll with a windows 7 version, and reformatting the entire computer back to factory settings and setting it up as like a new PC. (non of this worked)

Game Troubleshooting
I have tried running Artemis as windowed in different windowed sizes, as full screen, as full screen windowed, as the server, as the client, as the server and clients (it eventually crashes in all instances at some random point). It sometimes crashes at the start screen before starting the game, sometimes before I connect to the server, sometimes after battle, sometimes during battle, sometimes when doing nothing, sometimes when we are at warp, sometimes i can finish an entire solo game without it crashing, I have tried games with multiple ships. Etc.... I have basically tried to figure out what the trigger is but have not come across anything that makes it a definite or even theoretical. It does seem to happen quicker the more clients there are but this could be a coincidence  because it seems to change each time I spin up the game. For example the most I have been able to test total clients (the issue computer being a client) is 5 clients with 1 server. If the surface pro computer is a client and it crashes during game play it does not affect the server or other clients. Thus for game-play, I have just made my Surface the Captain's map so that it is not a super critical role this way it does not matter if it crashes.

Again. Thank you for input as I am at my troubleshooting wits-end      [crazy]

I have not had any luck with this issue.

Again, any help would be most appreciated.

After a couple more weeks of the same errors, now I have a different reason for it crashing:

Faulting application name: Artemis.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5908b3ed
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.15063.608, time stamp: 0x802f667e
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000414ae
Faulting process id: 0x278c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d336fbb15b4468
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis\Artemis.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: ac158fde-a07c-4048-8395-b0fc55da03c3

Again. this is only on my Surface Pro 4 other windows 10 laptops seem to do fine with this.

Thanks again for looking. Any input would be appreciated.

The version of Hamak Sector that is included with the game has been bugged since its inclusion. The wrong copy of the mission was included in the initial release and it was never fixed. I have corrected the bug, and uploaded a new version of Havok in the Hamak Sector, along with many of the other stock missions, correcting them for 2.6. You can download the new mission here: https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/stock-missions-updated-for-2-6-8508185

I'm hoping all of those corrected missions will be included with Thom's next release. In addition, I am working on a simple Sandbox mission which will give you a selection of missions you can run, including exploration, trade and resource gathering missions. It will use the new Comms interface and not require a Gamemaster. I'm trying to hurry and get it done in time for the next release, but it's slow going.

I have heard that there may be an issue with a memory leak, but it appears to occur across multiple missions, instead of during a missions. It may help to shut Artemis down after playing a mission and restarting it instead of trying to go back into a game immediately. I'm unsure if this is related to the issue to OP is reporting.

Let me know if you run into any new bugs. I haven't heard anything bad, which is good news, but I don't really know how many folks have tried it.

I should add that Artemis's scripting language isn't really a programming language. It's really just XML, which is quite constraining. I am a programmer myself, and while it's functional, there are some things about the language that are very unusual. Such as, the whole script loops over and over, and events will repeat unless you design your conditionals well. And while it is very easy to chain AND conditionals in order to stack a bunch of prerequisites for an event, it is very difficult to write an OR conditional. You essentially have to write another event identical to the other condition and test for both.

I believe Thom's intention was to design a scripting system that was both easy to parse and implement (to make his job easier), and which would not require any background in programming. It can be strange at times, but it works. [biggrin]
