Had the weirdest problems at Con Nooga this weekend. We ran about 30 missions total, and had 5 server crashes. The strange thing was we had one particular crew get crashed twice: I was using the Armada IV script, and about 35 minutes into a 45 minute time slot, the server just crashed to the desktop.

Another crew had a server crash on a Siege level 4 mission.

We also had a server crash once while scrolling through the ship types before launch.

I swapped out from nVidia 1050Ti GPU to onboard Intel video: still had a crash.

Ran without Artemis Bridge Tools installed: had a crash.

Swapped out the entire server hardware for a Windows 7 laptop: still had a crash.

So basically I've eliminated every possible variable, so far as my hardware is concerned, and still have about a 20% failure rate of the server.

I have a theory that something about fighters causes some server weirdness. I'll know more when I run an all-day event this coming Saturday without fighters.

Have you seen the notes about the trouble they are having with 2.7.2 and fighters? It may be related, I could of course be drawing connections where none exist but might be worth checking into.

Yes, I had noted that--plus the fact launching a fighter when the server is in "autopilot" mode will also crash the game. There's probably some edge case lurking in there. Hopefully Thom can unearth it!

In 2.7.2 there is definitely a crash bug associated with fighters. It has to do with a new code Thom implemented to make sure the players never run completely out of fighter reloads - - - at least one base should always have one reload. There is a crash bug in that. There also seems to be a crash bug when the players have zero bases left - - - perhaps the code discoveres that the players are out of reload fighters and tries to put one in a base but since there are no bases the server crashes.

Thom fixed this problem in 2.7.2A but our tests show that there is still a crash bug. It may be related to mines or jellyfish.

Well, ran an all-day convention with no fighters and still had a crash, using the Armada IV GM script to ensure I had control over what spawned and where.

We were about 20 minutes into a 40 minute time slot, after spawning 2 small and one medium fleet. About 5 minutes later I spawned in 2 Skaraans, and shortly after that the server crashed to the desktop.

The only creatures were some whales spawned in at mission start ("Tombstone" sector).

There may have been mines deployed and left untriggered in our one crash.

I think the crash bug has to do with elite abilities. In that case your experience makes sense. It also makes sense that we experienced crashes at Cleveland Concoction at higher difficulty levels but no crashes at lower difficulty levels. If the crash is triggered by an elite ability and the elite abilities activate at random then more Skaraans means higher probability of a crash.
