Hello, I'm reporting a situation that has been happening for two weeks.
After approximatively one hour of playing Artemis, the server programm crash et get back to the windows screen.
No error message appeared.

I reproduce this every time we played more than one hour with Artemis 2.7.1 :

  • I tried on various stock mission or TSN Map : same result = crash.
  • I used another computer as server (another Asus GL552) : same result = crash.
  • I try to using TSN expension Hermes.exe, same result.
  • I desinstall Artemis and play with a new stock installation : same result = crash.

=> Do you think that le lastest windows update (1809) or Nvidia drivers update (3.17.0.126) could cause this crash with Artemis?
(There were the only changes since the crashes are appars).
2 weeks ago Artemis could run 2 hours or more without any problem (or an error message appear).

Thanks by adnvance for your feedback or advice.

Below is the settings (computers are only used for Artemis).

No change were made to our Artemis stock software installation. (no mod, no custom xml...).

I had a similar situation on my server: my in-progress testing solution was to buy a new $30 SSD and install Windows 10 directly from Microsoft, obliterating all the 3rd party software (Dell, nVidia, network stack hacks, etc). Now my server will run Solo mode missions (in AI autopilot mode) for many hours.

I personally think the problem was either a) the network performance "enhancements" provided by SmartByte, conflicting with the Artemis Bridge Tools or b) nVidia drivers.

I'll know more tomorrow when I set up the entire bridge and test it before next week's convention!

I tried to run from an non Nvidia GC server tomorow (another week end of Larp playing).

I'll share my results.

Fingers crossed

Here my feedback for the yesterday Artemis Game (only one Bridge 2 fighters and the Game Master).
A game during 6 hours using the GM Sandbox5a.

We've got 2 server crashes.
There were no particular situation or spécific action.
One the crashed was during a battle, but we choose to create only light units (no carriers like Arvonian Carrier...).
The crash was during a no action phase of the game.

I hope it will be helpfull.

I've never seen that one except when Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop had been used, but that seems to me to be an error message you'd see at launch, not in the middle of the game.

If that's on Windows 10, I'd recommend running the DirectX 9 installer provided here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

That installer will insert DirectX 9-specific code into the pipeline rather than using Windows 10 built in DirectX support.

Thanks for this information.
I'll install this old version of DirectX and try.

Hey LawsonThompson,

Not sure if you have the answers, but if you know: Is that DX9 installer supposed to take care of this issue from the other thread?

And!...

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/direct3d9/d3dcreate

Quote:

D3DCREATE_SOFTWARE_VERTEXPROCESSING
Specifies software vertex processing. For Windows 10, version 1607 and later, use of this setting is not recommended. Use D3DCREATE_HARDWARE_VERTEXPROCESSING.

Unless hardware vertex processing is not available, the usage of software vertex processing is not recommended in Windows 10, version 1607 (and later versions) because the efficiency of software vertex processing was significantly reduced while improving the security of the implementation.

So there you go: a security fix in Windows 10 "significantly reduced" the efficiency of software vertex processing.

And does that just help with a recent Win10 update? Or will it improve DX9 on a Win10 machine that hasn't been updated in a year?
