Let's be clear, though - You think Thom should focus on getting mobile devices caught up. You think Thom should change the focus of how he runs his business. You have a strong opinion, and I suspect quite a few people would also like mobile support to catch up. That being said:

Quote:
- There is no way mobile devices won't lag the pc game. Thom develops on PC.

Fact: We are three major revisions out of sync.

Quote:

- There's only one person here privy to the actual sales breakdown between direct pc, steam and mobile, and it ain't us. Nor do we know what sort of margins exist after various 3rd parties take their cut. I'd suggest that said information drives sales strategy.

FALSE  People are trying to buy Artemis. Closing the deal is being interrupted by the fact that you are out of sync with your revisions. These are not my words. The people who are waving cash  are writing comments of why they're not buying the product or have an issue with the product. These types comments can be seen on the iOS App Store.

Quote:
- The fact that Thom is running a one-man show is relevant, especially when discussing sales strategies. A small company generally has different goals and strategies than a large company.

Wrong: I mentioned the App Store, steam, DirecPC sales because it makes Thom equal to an EA or any other game producer. When Artemis is on the electronic store shelves customers do not care whether a programmer decides to wear purple pajamas to create the game.

Quote:
- There are already threads in the development section about mobile support requests.

I agree

Quote:
- I'm not sure what you mean by alpha and beta testers - we all see the released versions as they're released. Anyone can grab the latest version update.

A lot of the core folks on this board are extremely creative. Ccomments and thoughts of working through ideas to improve the game I believe would be an Alpha. I am also surprised when a release version comes out how many of you find and detail bugs in a relatively short amount of time. Beta cycle.

Discontinuing the mobile version completely will solve that inequality.

Ah, yes.  People who paid money for a product want that product to get the same basic support as the 'parent' product (which they also paid money for), and people *want* to buy the product, but won't until they can actually *use* it with the parent product.  So the solution is to screw them over by discontinuing the product.

That's a great way to make money, repay customer loyalty, and build a further fan-base.  /s

We get that there's going to be some lag between version X for PC and version X for iOS and version X for Android, because it's developed *on* a PC, and then the changes are ported to the other platforms.

The attitude of 'us PC users have ours, you mobile folks can @#$% off' is BS.  We're not even asking to get same-day releases.  We're just asking for some indication of a *timeline* for when we might expect to get the update.

Note: The fact that the public 2.2, and 2.3 releases were kinda-sort-beta is useful information, but they weren't *labeled* as such, so unless you start a thread like this (only to get chewed out by insiders for not knowing something that was never communicated), there's no way to *know* that.  That's just a poor communication issue, and that can be fixed pretty easily.

OK folks, this is a news thread about the release of 2.4.0 for PC. Steam has been updated as well. Mobile release was not specifically addressed, but will probably be forthcoming.

This is quickly becoming a "tell Thom how to run his business" thread. Please take discussions of how to run a business to the Off Topic section.

There are other threads in the development section for game functionality requests, including mobile device support. Please move further discussions there.

so back to 2.4.0....

The GM improvements are amazing! I love how Xavior and the other sandboxes have been able to make use of them to make GMing that little bit and by little bit I mean 10 AU better... the fighters are fun in ther ecurrent form but I do think they need another pass interface wise and I have seen plenty of cases with fighters flying backwards model wise. the ability to get to the server options in a scripted mission is going to make missions that much more flexiable and intresting. The Ximi ships im still making my mind up on as I havnet realy had the chance to play with them.. but I wholeheartedly approve and applaued them! I lookfoward to the opertunity to play around with bombers as well when the time comes around! Thank you Thorm!

May I ask if there are any more plans to live-stream codeing sessions? I did enjoy watching and seeing how the guts of artemis work - It inspired me to pick up visual studio (Free for personal use by the by to others) and do my limited best to improve on the Mission Editor to bring it up to speed.

First: hooray for 2.4!  We're seeing updates quickly here, and since our group is just now getting into scripting, the usability improvements there are a big deal.

Mobile support really makes a game possible when you can't muster quite as many laptops as people.  Helm, Tactical, Science, and Comms all work quite well on tablets, and you can get away with a mobile in a pinch. I'm not going to try to boss Thom around here, I'll just say that we've been sticking around at 2.1 on all the PCs just so that we can use the tablets when someone inevitably forgets a laptop at our regular Sunday games.

Thom has already announced that he has someone working on a release of 2.3 for iOS. Since it will be easy enough to just continue the development until it is ready to support 2.4, I'm guessing that he will skip 2.3 and just go right to the 2.4 release. Once that is done, an Android release of 2.4 will probably follow.

Artemis 2.2 was never released on tablet because it was bugged, and Thom was never able to find and fix the bug until just before 2.3 came out. I recommend treating Artemis 2.2 like Highlander 2 or Indiana Jones 4; it never existed.

ROFL - well played.

I'm guessing 2.3 for iOS will be released, since it's getting close to deployment based on the images of the iPad playing it.  Then it'll be on to 2.4.

It could be possible to release a version of 2.4 that includes the fighters and carriers but not the Ximni. On the other hand, I don't know what network differences there are between 2.3 and 2.4. I intended to try running a 2.3 client with a 2.4 server and never got around to it.

If there are major differences between 2.3 and 2.4 then yes, I would expect 2.3 to come out first. But I get the impression that 2.4 is basically just 2.3 with a little extra. (Previously it would have been called 2.31 or 2.3.1)

I mean, does anyone really want to continue using 2.3 on the PC? Is there any advantage to that?

Some mission scripts that worked in 2.3 will not play in 2.4 without some key revision. Crews who want to play those missions but don't want to edit the scripts should keep a copy of 2.3 on hand.

Good point, but I think the same could be said about 2.1.

There are protocol differences due to the Accent Color choice for the ship, so 2.3 and 2.4 are not interoperable.

tl-dnr "Happy this game is here."

Longer read: About 15 years ago I was speaking with my brother about how inter-networked games like Doom, Halo, etc had matured a multi-PC networked game and wouldn't it be cool if a startrek-type bridge simulation game with various stations for a co-op game etc, etc.
Artemis is EXACTLY the game I envisioned and I'm thrilled to see it is working and thriving. I'm only annoyed that it's now ten years old and I only stumbled on it last night and might have trouble grabbing 5 other people to play with.

I had to register an d log in to comment so I could toss my 4 cents into the arena about mobile - PC rev differences.

To my (limited)knowledge there isn't any game that can inter-operate between PC and mobile, much less two mobile platforms along with PC.
I run a computer / network service company so I have a boat-load of tablets, PC's monitors and large screen TV's that would make it easy for me to assemble a bridge.
I look forward to dropping some cash on the game in several forms and learning how much I've missed.

Is there any place I can find screenshots of the game?
