Had to abandon this update... the ipad app does NOT work with this version. The app crashes right after you join the server. Any chance the ipad app will be updated to work with the latest version?

(Kind of unfortunate that Steam (where I purchased it) does not have the latest 1.2.5 version and you end up with the older version 1.2.1... I saw the app and purchased it and then saw the 1.2.5 update after... love using the ipad as a station and would rather use the older version for now.)

The war server has been out for three months now, a quarter of a year! Has anyone played a major war other than the crews at my house?

Has any admiral figured out the build point system? Your crews earn build points by winning sectors. Two crews fighting separate battles in the same sector could win it by each defeating half the enemies, BUT I believe you would earn no build points.

I have playtested it myself using only one player, but I couldn't get any further than the single ship sectors. I was planning on trying a game with my usual crew, but that's going to have to wait since I want to play some regular games to get in some practice for Artemis Armada.

Alas, I'm not the guy to go to for multiship games. [biggrin]

Any updates on the War Server?
I can't seem to find the download... did it get discontinued?

As far as I know The War Server is not discontinued, but it is also not undergoing further development. Thom expressed some disappointment in the reception of the War Server at Artemis Armada One last spring.

When you run the Artemis 2.2.0 upgrade do you get the War Server with it? I actually don't know.

The War Server is a separate download. It may not be available on the Web Site. I haven't been there since it went down. (And I can't get there now, I'm at work)

Yeah its not in the update... I will check Steam "tools" when I get home today.
Sometimes it is not included by default. The site it used to be on is 404 now.

I don't think Steam has the War Server. It is only available on this site.

Edit: Now that I check the site, the War Server isn't available in the Downloads section. I don't know if this is intentional or Thom just neglected to include it in the downloads.

I talked with Thom about this tonight. He didn't realize that the War Server wasn't available on the new website. That was an oversight. It should be available again soon.

At the same time he was very disappointed in the way the War Server worked out at Armada. He may stop development of it.

No more war server, no more android version...

Gee this is not encouraging.

I guess the positive takeaway from this would be that Thom can focus solely on Artemis moving forward.

I am curious as to how the war server disapointed him

I don't want to speak for Thom on this, but I'll try to interpret the little bit I saw at Armada. Players did not understand the turn system at first. Once they did understand it they didn't like the pressure it put them under.

For those who haven't used the War Server, it is like a giant chess board of sectors on which enemy units spawn at the top and march downward while friendly (player) ships more upward. When you launch the War Server you specify the number of turns the players have to win the game, say twelve turns.  Then you specify the time duration of each turn, let's say ten minutes. This gives you a war that will be (12 turns) x (10 minutes) = 120 minutes long.

At the start of every turn new enemies spawn and existing enemies move one sector (if they can), all at the same time. Then the ten minute timer starts. The Admiral looks at the number of enemy ships in each enemy sector and orders each of the player ships to attack a different enemy sector on the front lines.

When a player ship enters a sector the War Server looks at the chessboard and generates a Single Front mission. If the chessboard says there are five enemies and two bases in the sector, then the War Server provides five randomly selected enemies and two randomly selected bases. The players' job is to destroy all the enemies and defend all the bases.

If a player ship destroys all enemies in its sector that sector becomes a friendly sector and the Admiral can order that ship to attack a new enemy sector. But if the ten minute timer runs out in mid battle then that battle doesn't count; all of the enemies respawn and advance down the chessboard. Then the next ten minute timer starts immediately.

There is no limit to the number of sectors that any given player ship can liberate during one ten minute turn. This means players who kill enemies quickly will be more successful. Players who hesitate and take their time will be less successful.

The pressure is on to win battles quickly. Thus you end up with a bunch of crews that stay at Red Alert, fighting constantly for two hours. Unless you have a floater officer available no one has time to use the bathroom.

Maybe the War Server could implement some sort of "rest" feature. For instance, maybe once a sector is freed, the ship can't move on to another sector for a period of time. Or, it CAN move on to another sector, but it will be at reduced strength. (Maybe the ordinance it used on the last mission is not regenerated) If the ship "takes a break", it's power will come back at a steady rate.

Alternately, if the above isn't possible (the War Server would have to keep track of the ship's stats) make the new sector spawn additional "reinforcements" if the ship moves on too soon. You could actually end up with more enemies than you started with if you move too fast.

You could also make the "rest break" between turns longer, or require the Admiral to manually begin the next turn.
