Not entirely sure where to post this, so I figured I'd just put it in "help"!

Is it at all possible to change the animation for beam weapons on the ships? The reason I'm asking is that if you were able to put the fighter beam animation in place of the regular beam animation, one could give the illusion that the ship is firing something like a turret, one round after another.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Thank you!

To be honest, I'm not sure what you are referring to. Are you talking about the speed at which a fighter fires their beam weapon? Are you talking about the appearance of the beam when it is shot? Please explain.

Sorry for being unclear. Let em try and explain a little better.

When you fire a beam weapon as a regular player ship, there is a single unbroken beam that fires from your ship to your target, like in Star Trek. However, when you're flying as a fighter, when you fire your beam weapon you fire in a burst of 3 pink blasts towards your target. I'm wondering if it's possible that when a player ship fires it's beam, it could get the 3 blast burst like with the fighter instead of the single unbroken beam.

Does that make more sense?

I think something like that is done in the BSG mod.  Somewhere in the vessel data I think he adjusted the beams in someway to make them shoot faster but the damage per beam was reduced to equal the full damage of the single beam shot.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe if the beam graphic, which is a line, is changed to a dot or small rectangle, the beam will have the "pulse" effect you are looking for. However, it will pulse at the frame rate of the game, not the rate of the beam shot, so you can't exactly create a "projectile" (bolt) type shot.

I believe the fighter animation is different, as well as the beam graphic being changed. However, it's been a long time since I experimented with this, and I could be wrong. You might try searching back over the old posts about beam graphics.

Just to update, I did a quick search of my own posts and found the file used to create the beam is glowEngineSmooth.bmp. There are two image files in the stock folder (at least in my copy) which look more like bullets, and substituting one of those images for the beam might make it more "bolt-like".

Also here's a thread where I discuss that idea, although I never tried it myself: https://artemis.forumchitchat.com/post/a-babylon-5-mod-7520452
