Hi all,

Has anyone tried using an old Android tablet or phone to create custom keypads for Artemis?

There are applications like gPad remote touchpad that allow you to set up custom touchpad layouts with custom icons that send generic keyboard presses to a server app running on your PC over Wifi, USB, or Bluetooth.

I set up a very basic weapon's console on my phone as an example:
I didn't add a background image and my icons are very basic, but if you wanted to you could create some really nice looking touchpads.

Well that's just cool. Have you successfully used it in game? It seems like setting up the keyboard inputs that way would make a lot of sense.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to test it. Not too many Artemis fans where I live. I have tested that the keyboard presses were arriving at my PC though. I thought such tablets could be easily fit into custom consoles.

Just to show you a bit more of what you can do I added a background and some alternate example buttons:

That looks pretty slick! Can you connect to your computer with it, at least? The recent reviews of the app in the play store aren't promising, but if it connects to your computer then it'll probably work with Artemis.

Yeah, it connected to my PC no problems. I opened up notepad and confirmed that the keypresses I configured were correct. I should probably add that I have the pro edition https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisters.android.remote.paid&hl=en

Oh my goodness, this looks absolutely amazing. Considering I have two or three old unused touchscreen devices lying around, I may need to pursue this. Hopefully I'll have some results this evening I can share!

Hmm, tried it out with a few laptops and had some trouble getting shifted keys to work. Which is strange because they were working fine in notepad... Will try some more later.

I don't own any Android devices but I would get one to try this. Can you customize and animate the buttons? That is, can you have a red flashing button mapped to "X" or a button labeled ECM mapped to "D"?

It is possible to map keys to custom buttons that have your own graphics or text, but I don't believe you can change the animations.

I've been playing around a bit more and realised I was working to an old version of the key mapping. Apparently there is no "cycle" hot keys anymore, there is only load/fire. Unload seems only possible via the mouse. That kinda sucks. I didn't manage to get shifted keys working right so just remapped the shifted keys to regular keys.
