I imagine them like native american-indians, living in harmony with the land. I'd love to use names inspired by them like swift striker, or rolling thunder (currently in use in the TSN RP group).

Vikings were actually pretty fun-loving people. They had a reputation as conquerers, yes, which apparently the Ximni are not, but they also drank a lot and had parties. [biggrin] "Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die" could very will have been a Viking saying.

I like to say that Vikings that were killed in battle went to Valhalla, where they got to fight every day for eternity, and were resurrected at the end of the day so they could go back to the hall and feast. But the REALLY lucky ones got to stay in Freya's hall. She was the goddess of love. [biggrin]

I got caught up in the idea of the Ximni as warriors, but apparently they love the fight not for the fight, but for the challenge. They'd just as soon brag about how they were almost pulled into a black hole, and jumped out of the event horizon, or went face to face with Charybdis, and dodged his teleport beam.

Vikings were farmers, settlers, traders, explorers and renowned warriors. They explored massive distances and were a very sophisticated people, far beyond the raiding and drinking stereotypes often seen on TV.

It is possible for the Ximni to be accomplished in battle without thinking of themselves as a "warrior race." No nation currently on Earth identifies itself as a "warrior nation" and yet some of them have powerful military forces.

Ximni aren't fans pillaging, but they would consider Viking helmets to look awesome. They would also love Viking parties.

My Ximni were wearing lightly armored flightsuits at the Armada LARP, not everyday civilian dress, because they had just arrived at a space station where their duties involved the potential for hostilities and the need to make a jump quickly. If they had come to party, they would have been much more relaxed and dressed very differently indeed.

Hairstyles and facial structure among Ximni vary widely; just because this crew favored a shaggy, yarny hairstyle doesn't mean that all Ximni do.

I would not discount the possibility that the Vikings have been given a worse reputation than they probably deserved.

Similarly, to the Terrans the Ximni may appear to be Mad Max-style space warriors, living on scavenged resources and keeping old, tough spaceships running long after they should be sent to the junkheap, while the Ximni think of themselves as farmers, settlers, traders, explorers, and yes, renowned warriors.

Whether the Viking reputation is better or worse than reality is a matter of perspective. Accurate or not, the Viking reputation for being badass explorers is something a Ximni crew could embrace.
