Before leaving a station seeking adventure, consider this  -- 

"Comms, does this base we are docked at have Homing Torpedos?" 
"Aye"
"Helm, undock, but don't go far."
"Weapons, convert 1 Homing to Energy."
"Comms, have base stand-by for docking." "Ready"
"Helm - dock up."
                                    Should lead to a small overcharge, 1098 or so. 

And an idea for dealing w/ those NASTY Ska'arens w/ tractor beams. Just after they shoot you, Drop Shields and hit them w/ an EMP. You'll be in the Area Of Effect, but w/ shields down, may not have any affect on you. AND it might disrupt their tractor. NEEDED - brave {foolhearty!} crew to test this hypothesis!
I am fairly sure the {small} overcharge idea (see above) will work, but this is all By Guess And By Gosh!  Call this tactic {IF it works!} "Singeing the Ska'aren's Beard"

I was curious about this: I do know that I have shot a skarren w an active tractor beam and it has caused the tractor to disengage for a second or two. to confirm the second part, I went into the game and fired an EMP at the starting base within the EMPs blast radius; it caused the shield to go to 50% even though the shields were down.

Last night we {the Eastern Front} tried Shields Down-Use EMP To Break Tractor idea.  FAIL, on both counts.  Ska'aren had us tractorred, beamed us, so we dropped shields and EMPed them.  Raised shields and they were now yellow, front and rear.  So, we boosted beams and blew him away the old fashioned way. I guess an EMP isn't so much the traditional Electro-Magnetic Pulse {of an atomic blast} as an Ionic Storm.  Affects unshielded and surface electronics of a ship.  A civilian transport would not have shielding on their computers.  {Saving a few credits during the building phase.}  And while shield generators maybe be safely shielded w/in a warship the shield projectors would need to be external.   

So, I am 50-50...

Note EMPs effect friendly fighters, too, and drop their "hull" to 1/2. Of course, fighters can't raise or lower their shields, but it makes sense that it's not the shield itself that is being disrupted, but the ship's ability to generate the shield.
